Not at all. It never has been. I comb and brush it twice a day and almost never hit a snag of any sort.
I have borderline fine-medium hair as measured by laser diffraction. It hates water and is very tangly when wet. I discovered this video several years ago, about the time I joined LHC. Before I tried it, I thought she was nuts letting her hair dry before detangling. It changed my life.
Handling super long hair - pt 4 detangling after drying
While I don't braid my hair to dry as in this video series (which takes forever, to dry not the series), DRY detangling is the only way for me!

Yep--I agree. Definitely I will not comb my hair until it is dry (or at least mostly dry). Wet hair (in addition to being weaker and more likely to break--and nobody wants that!) clumps together and is just a big slop! I'll do some finger detangling while wet (actually helps hair dry faster too), and that can help "prep" my hair for when it's dry and ready for the comb.
Tangles can be either really bad or not too bad (the detangling "prep" can help)--though one thing that really makes my hair be a mess is wind. I'm glad I don't live in a windy climate!
Even the difference for me between damp and completely dry is enormous. Dry is ok, damp makes me wait. As you reach waist and beyond, I'm sure you'll find it will show an increased propensity toward tangles, wind or no wind, unless its highly constrained. That's just thermodynamics. Learn to braid if you don't already know how. Orderly crossings are much better than disorderly ones.

I see that I was not imagining things! My hair is also very tangly, it literally has time to create more tangles in the time it takes me to brush it, so I would agree that this is normal for fine hair. Buns and braids 24/7 are the only way to go for me, as soon as they are long enough to stay in an elastic. I agree with using oils (just a little though) and dry detangling. I would also say that if you get too many tangles and it takes too long to brush your hair, don't be afraid to use the forbidden paddle brush ha ha. If you go slow/don't pull/follow the standard recommendations basically, the damage is really minimal.

I think I'm still in that "honeymoon stage" where my hair is definitely long but not quite long enough to have the issues like greater amount of tangling, getting caught in things, etc. I watched a few videos on braiding, though it looks like it will take some practice. But for now, I'm still enjoying having my hair down nearly all the time.
I guess a good perspective too would be the thought that the tips of my hair are approaching 4 years old, and 4 years is a lot of time for wear-and-tear on my hair. Good thing for me to remember regarding caring for my hair.
Not at all. It's way too slippery, though on very rare occasion I get a fairy knot at an end.
I haven't used anything but finger detangling for a long time now, I think that's helped. Don't own a brush, couldn't tell you where my wide toothed comb is![]()

Mine will tangle on itself if I get any kind of product buildup from using mousse or such without clarifying regularly. Usually that results in more lint trapped in it which equals tangles. My ends need some tlc after vacationing in an area where I had not great water pressure and different water than I'm used to. I used different products while I was there and my hair didn't care for that. So so happy to be home again where I can better control what I'm using.
Yes, my individual hairs are very fine, and tangle with most movement, or where they've been against my shirt. The more damaged and more curly areas tangle the most. I find that Desert Essence green apple conditioner creates a really helpful extreme amount of slip for me, which definitely reduces tangles significantly, though it does make my hair look very limp and straighter and lifeless, as nice as the sleekness is, so I use it more on the ends than anything. But if you're fine with just being sleek, that's great. Especially after a fermented rice water treatment. My hair looked like little kid hair after that hahaha.
