Thread: Coloring my hair red?

  1. #1

    Default Coloring my hair red?

I am new here and new to developing healthy hair habits (say that three times fast, LOL!). In November I colored my hair red for the first time before that I had darker blondish brownish hair. Since dying it I have been using Color Lux Color Cleansing Conditioner in Red to keep the red color from fading. I have been doing it once a week and it helps keep the red red.

I wanted to find a more permanent solution and recently bought Light Mountain Natural Hair Color and Conditioner in Red (henna).

Has anyone used Color Lux color cleansing conditioner? It really does seem to help keep the red vibrant. It has shea butter, coconut oil, and avocado oil which I know are good for the hair. But there are other ingredients too. So not sure how healthy it is for hair.

And has anyone had success using henna hair color from Light Mountain? Is it permanent or would I have to redo it over time?

    Thanks,
    Christy

If you are wanting to henna, thinking it is very permanent: it is. Do only research "roots only" because once you attain that red that you want on your virgin color, you do not want to keep dyeing the full length (it will go darker until it's auburn).

Also, test strand, and do it on your virgin hair, so let that non-permanent color fade out first! Test strand on shed hair, so if you think about doing this on impulse: don't.

Also keep in mind that henna is orange, like what you see on a natural red head. If you are using temporary dye to get true red, you aren't going to get the same with henna.

I started out dying my hair permanently at the salon then began using the semi-permanent color cleansing conditioner to keep it from fading. When it faded it looked awful. Are you saying I need to just let it fade and grow out before I were to use henna? I did see where someone took the hair off their brush and dyed that with henna. I thought that was a good idea just to make sure I liked the color before trying it.

    Thanks,
    Christy

    This is my current color.

So it will change to looking more orange then?

What Obsidian says, no way are you going to get that color with henna; henna is orange.

Light Mountain Natural Hair Color and Conditioner in Red has some amla in it as well, so it won't be the straight up orange glow of henna. But it's really best if you take Lapushka's suggestion of testing on shed hair and not the hair attached to your head. No buyer's remorse that way!

Henna itself is extremely permanent. Some of the other ingredients you can add to tweak the color (like amla, hibiscus, indigo) can fade with time.

So i tried the henna on some shed hair and now I see what you all mean. It's orangey.

I decided to not use it on my hair... at least not yet. Instead I used a semi permanent color dye today (manic panic in vampire red and purple haze mixed). It turned out a bit more purple than I thought it would but so far I like it. Well see how it looks in the daylight tomorrow.

It is possible to get a cooler red over time but it requires a ton of applications and you can't ever get it out. And it will always have a copper glow in the sunlight so you've got to like that. It is very good for your hair though.
Manic panic is neat! I've used it a few times. It looks lovely!
