Default What is a "dusting" to you?

Inspired by a post I saw on reddit, what do you all consider to be a dusting? I personally thought it was removing splits along the length of the hair by twisting strands and cutting the ends that pop out so as to retain length - however MANY stylists on reddit indicate that a "dusting" is removing all the dead ends, essentially a trim!

    So, what does LHC think?

I've always considered a dusting to be a very, very light trim. Not enough to alter an uneven hemline, just to remove a few straggling hairs.

On this forum, S&D = Search (for splits) and Destroy.

mmmm yeah, I always thought it was like a less thorough S&D, snipping off the ends of all the hairs rather than just the splits! That seems like a very reasonable interpretation though as a very light trim (does it differ from microtrimming? maybe in purpose idk)

Less than or equal to half a cm, to me, is a dusting. Hard to do, which is why I wait and then trim a bigger piece.

This is very specifically called S&D, or search and destroy, as others have already said. Dusting is a very small trim.

Yeah fair enough, I guess it's just an imprecise term since
this and this describe the dusting technique I think of (cutting off ALL ends that stick up, not just splits), this explains basically S&D, this and this defines it as a small trim. Whereas this one distinguishes between "surface dusting" (what I thought dusting was) and "dusting" (<1/4" trim)

For me, a dusting is less then half a cm, just a very light trim.

To be fair, a dusting will almost *never* remove split ends. Splits are never that low down or only that low down. If you want to get rid of those, you need to either S&D or be prepared to lose at least a couple inches.

That's a really good point, I guess the aim may be to "remove split ends without removing length", but it would be quite difficult without S&D or a bigger trim...
In the end you have to cut off the splits to get rid of them, if only there was a way to get rid of splits without losing any length whatsoever!

Errr, there is. It's called S&D.
