It is supposed to indicate you're online. When I had that enabled, I noticed sometimes it'd go out after I was inactive for a bit, but refreshing always brought it back. Could that be it?
When browsing threads, I see in my own posts that light is green (I assumed this meant I was logged in) yet sometimes it is not (so my assumption must be wrong).
What does this indicator indicate?

Hmmm, that might be it lapiz_lazuli. All the ones I see now appear green. Usually when I log in I open all the newposts of interest each in a separate browser tab and then go thru them from the first the last. Sometimes I might have 20 or 30 tabs open. So it can be a while between viewing (and responding to) the first and last threads. Maybe that's when it goes out. I'll have to check tomorrow morning. Thanks for the insight!
ETA1: oops, except for this one just now while I've been "composing" here (I'm a bit slow) ... ETA2 but posting this made it green again so you're right!
SO ... if you're actively posting (say within the past 45 seconds), it's green else it's not

If you marked in your settings that you don't want to make it apparent to people when you are online or not, that might have something to do with it.I had a quite determined stalker at one point, and... yeah, rest is history.
