Default Quick fix for clarifying disaster?

I wanted to do a clarifying prior to a root touch-up. I've been using a milder one (Live Clean) over the last year, but this time pulled out my old favourite, Avalon. I don't know WHAT the heck happened! Maybe my hair no longer likes the formula, or the bottle was old (since it rarely gets used). I've now thrown it and the new bottle out. I've never in my life had hair like this. Feels soft (which is surprising), but looks like a parched mess has been feeling plasticky. Zero shine.

I've used my regular products the last couple washes and today used some others I don't usually use. My hair feels better but still looks a thatched nightmare.

I think I'll cave and go back to cones for a while to see if it at least *looks* better. I'd rather it *were* better...I'm concerned there won't be improvement till I grow this all out

Any ideas for either a quick fix to the problem, or at least disguising it till it eventually grows out?

    Thanks!

I would say you might need a strong shampoo with SLS not the mild one with ton of oils and humectants.

Poli, thank you for your reply and insight! That's interesting, I wouldn't have thought of a stong shampoo.

I concur, it sounds like build up. Get a strong shampoo without stuff that can build up, like Guar or polyquats, and wash it.

Agree with everyone else who said clarify! Get a shampoo without cones, oils or anything that could cause buildup, and wash.

If you have access to it, get a simple big bottle of Suave daily clarifying (it might have a silicone?) and get used to using it at least once a month. Makes a ton of difference if you can get all that gunk out once in a while.

Just so I'm understanding correctly, the advice for a Strong Shampoo is to use as a future clarifier? Not as a routine shampoo.

Also to clarify ( my original post), the shampoo I used was a clarifying shampoo.

Yes, exactly. And I’ve looked up Avalon clarifying shampoo, and from an ingredients perspective it doesn’t look clarifying but YMMV. It apparently doesn’t work for you (anymore). I think SLS or SLES are better clarifiers.

My idea is give it a deep moisture treatment. Alternatively, you might do the protein vs moisture test. I was surprised to find months ago that my hair needed protein.

Avalon is sulfate-free, or at least sulfate mild, so I would take "clarifying" with a huge grain of salt.

Try brands like: Suave, Tresseme, Pantene, L'Orιal, or Herbal Essences. Or even regular Head & Shoulders, if a boyfriend or SO has that on hand, us it!
