What do you consider a "chop?"

I think it depends on the state of the hemline being removed. If the ends are for example very raggedy (aka fairytailed) then cutting back to where the hair is more dense would be to my mind more of a "trim" than would the same length cut off from a fuller hemline which would be a "chop". So I didn't vote

I chose 4 inches but then I read some of the other responses and would have to agree that the density of the hair being cut plays into it, too. If, say, 40 hairs are cut 4 or more inches to make the hem a bit thicker, I wouldn't consider that a chop.

I can't answer in inches because for me it's all about proportions. I would say when someone cuts an 1/8th or more of their visible length, that's a chop. Less than that is a trim.
I mean of course it all comes down to how the person getting their hair cut feels about it, but that's what determines how I would describe it from my perspective.

When I cut from bottom-of-neck length back to chin length to get rid of the rest of my layers, that was a chop. But it was like 4''-5'' or so, and if my hair was already very long I'd consider 4'' a trim.
At that length though, it was roughly 1/2 of my total hair length, so it definitely felt like a chop.

If we're talking mainstream 'long', like APL and beyond, maybe 4-6" because that's often a couple of milestones. Cutting back one milestone to me is usually a cut, unless it is to get rid of layers or back to dense hair in which case the mindset is more to do with hair quality than preserving length and thus still a chop. A trim can be anything up to a milestone (usually 2 or 3 inches) depending on how frequent it is; so 3" once a year can be a trim, because you still end with more length than you started the year. The more often someone trims, the smaller the amount of hair that counts as one before turning into a cut. But the ultimate factor I agree is still the proportion of hair.

Also a drastic change of style, regardless of length, to me feels like a chop.

I've been enjoying reading everyone's responses! I also consider cutting a milestone or more as a chop. I actually usually view chops in milestones, rather than inches. I suppose it is something that is hard to numerically define, although I wanted to try.

I said 4" simply because that is how much I had to take off to get my hemline even- in 1984, when I was my sister's MoH and had to have it look nice from the back. It was still longer than the streamer on my hat. Haven't taken off that much at one time since.

Probably just a lingo difference, but "chop" means a drastic cut, where I'm from. A cut for me would be like anything around 1-2+ inches off, but an actual "I chopped my hair off" moment is about 6+ inches in my world
