Re: Hello!
Hello and welcome!
It seems that you know which shampoo is good for your scalp, but it dries out your length. Applying conditioner to the length before you wash will help to protect it. This is known here as CWC (Condition Wash Condition). There’s a bit of information on the standard newbie advice. It makes such a huge difference!
You can also add a leave in conditioner, and/or a few drops of oil, after you wash to help keep the moisture in, and it makes the hair feel lovely and smooth You have some wave to your hair, so applying those products when your hair is dripping wet will help to minimise frizz. (My hair frizzes on the day I wash it not matter what I do but it’s smooth the next day.)
When you get back to swimming, coconut oil helps to protect the hair from chlorine. If you don’t get on with coconut oil, then putting conditioner through your hair before you swim will still help.

Re: Hello!
Howdy! I too have been a lifelong long hair person who came here because my hair was starting to show more damage. A year and a half or so of part-babying, part-ignoring, and I am back to loving my hair again : )
Two contrasting suggestions for your "happy scalp, dry lengths" issue. 1) Have you tried washing only the scalp, and trying to keep the lengths out of the water/shampoo residue? 2) Have you tried slathering your lengths in conditioner before shampooing the scalp? Cheapo dollar-per-bottle conditioner is perfect for this.
Personally, I have found catnip very helpful for preventing split ends. I make a tea with it, strain it out, and put it in a spray bottle for spritzing onto my hair when detangling it between washes, as well as occasionally using catnip tea as an after-wash rinse/dip thing. I readily admit that I just use regular catnip ("for cats") from the grocery store, and it does fine.
