I feel like I must be totally overlooking a setting. I see how to set an entire blog to private. And how to set a specific post within a non-private blog to contacts only. But I can't find an option to have a private post on a non-private blog. Is that really not an option? Or where is it hiding?

If you start a new blog post, at the bottom, look for "options" and there you have a few options to limit that specific blog post. If those options are not restrictive enough for you and you want the post to only be visible to yourself, you can post and then immediately edit and delete the blog post. Since the only option is to "soft delete" you will still be able to open it but no other member will know of its existence.
