Roots and lengths almost every wash, to get rid of the silicones and grease
Roots only
Roots and lengths
Roots usually, length every X washes
I only use cheese on my hair
Like so many others, I focus on the roots and let the suds run down the length. If I'm using a 'poo bar, I split my hair into horizontal sections and run the bar vertically over each near the scalp. On the rare occasion I use liquid shampoo, I mostly apply it to the nape, create suds there, then spread the foam to the rest of my head. Since I only use sulfate-free products, some of which have difficulty sudsing up, I find it's easiest to make suds underneath.

These days I wash roots twice a week and whatever suds run down the lengths. I’ll do the lengths when I chelate once a month.
I shampoo just my scalp, and condition only the length of my hair. The only time I fully do both is if I’m restarting with a clarifying shampoo, which isn’t often.
When I wash, weekly, I also clarify. Too many styling products on my length, also oil rinse, 2x conditioner, it all builds up quite fast. It means I suds up the lengths and I suds up the scalp. I usually suds up my lengths before even touching my scalp, so it can "sit" a minute while my head gets "massaged" well with shampoo.
Usually the roots only, but if I’ve used any products or my hair it very dirty, e.g. sand, dirt, paint, etc. then I would also apply to the lengths. Otherwise, I apply shampoo to the scalp and let the suds wash down when rinsing.
I've been doing roots only since forever basically but I also put shampoo on the back of my head/neck because sometimes I get build up there.
I shampoo roots only 1-2 times a week.
I use a sulfate shampoo (Vo5) from roots to end every 1.5 to 2 weeks. Coconut oil on wet hair combats any dryness.

I only apply my shampoo on my scalp, never on my length. I consider it's washed when I rince the shampoo. The only times I apply it on my length, it's when I have dirt in it and it's rare!
