I haven’t come across that anywhere, I read that biotin is water soluble and that your body dumps any excess! I don’t know why they sell these supplements and claim they help hair growth if they have the opposite effect :/

Can I ask where you’ve found that info? I’m worried now!

I wouldn't worry about the biotin claims on here. There's so many mixed views concerning that. I tend to stick to the most relevant literature on that, which states that biotin is water soluble, and as you've mentioned, your body will rid itself of excess, even in higher than normal amounts. Of course it can vary with individuals, but that margin of variability is quite small. Relatively speaking, and if there were any signs of toxicity, i'm sure your body would've alerted you anyways, (nausea, skin flushing, insomnia, excessive urinating, stomach issues, etc.)

Im more concerned with what you're deeming "hair fall". Can you recall if this hair fall is shedding or if its breakage? If its the former, perhaps theres things concerning your diet, exercise, or hormonal activity which could stand to be corrected? If its the latter, then there's definitely something going on with your hair care, and product usage that could stand to be fixed.

I’ve had both, there was definitely some breakage a few weeks back which has made me think it could’ve been down to protein in hair treatments. Over the last couple of weeks though it’s coming out loads when I wash my hair and there are disturbing amounts on my comb when I comb conditioner through, and my hair is looking noticeable thinner.
My diet is good, I exercise regularly, and the only health issue I have that I know of if hypothyroidism. I think I’m going to try and speak to my doctor and get another blood test.

It's water-soluble, so more likely to do your kidneys in than your liver I thought?

OP water-soluble doesn't mean benign, our bodies still have to process it in order to excrete the excess and megadoses can put a strain on the systems processing it. Overdosing is one thing and in terms of vitamins is usually okay, but megadosing is quite another. If you haven't had any symptoms I wouldn't worry about long-term damage, but we have had members who've had kidney pain from excess biotin without other symptoms like acne. It can also skew blood test results, just FYI in case you get any bloodwork done while taking / having recently taken it.

Thanks for the info, I’m glad I posted here and I think you’ve all confirmed my suspicions about the biotin. I’ve not taken it today and won’t be ever again. Just hope my hair loss stops now, it’s quite upsetting to think that I’ve been taking the damn things to help my hair and have probably ended up making it a million times worse

Please speak to your doctor before taking supplements. My iron got all out of whack several years ago and I don't even take a vitamin without her approval. As others have said, some vitamins can be toxic and any amount that is more than your body needs is too much.

I totally agree with everyone else above me. That much biotin is bad for the liver. I'm only taking either 3,000 mcg or 5,000 mcg of biotin daily for my hair, skin, and nails. My hair loves protein but Ii only use protein treatments and conditioners once a month. As you know, there is a such thing as protein overload, and the hair loss or fall can be do to a medical condition or stress. But, if stop taking biotin for a while helps you then fine. Whatever works for you. But I would definitely have my hormones check.

I've never heard of biotin harming the hair, even in excess. You just pee out what your body doesn't use. Definitely talk to a medical professional if possible. Situations like these are why it's always best to talk to a doctor before taking any supplements.

The thing is that the body still needs to process whatever goes through, and having to process a sh**ton of biotin could be very straining and take space from something else that needs to be processed instead.
