I think what helps most with pancakeing is
    a) Do it on dirty hair (or it's too slippery)
    b) do it a little bit as you go, not all at once when the braid is done
    c) reserve it for updos only!

This is what I found works for me. Especially when I do a crown braid, on maybe day 4 or 5 after a wash, pancaking really makes it look fresh and fun and stops those yucky-looking 'clumps' from forming in the oily hair.

For some reason seeing someone pancakeing a braid makes me cringe so much. So, no I can even think about pancaking a braid even if that leaves me with a baby thin braid

I always try, but I've noticed it doesn't seem to make my braids look much bigger. Now that other people have mentioned that might have to do with slippery hair... Yeah, it all makes sense now.

For some braids I do the thing where instead of pulling at the whole sections, I only pull out small parts on the "outer side" of the section, but it seems to mainly work for smaller braids for half ups or something.

It's super cute but it's impractical for me, they come loose and fall apart too fast if I do it my hair isn't even too slippery, it just gets really messy

I can relate! Something about it is just so weird to me.

I prefer tighter braids myself, so pancaking would give me the opposite of what I'm going for. That, and even if I tried it my hair is slippery so it probably wouldn't work.
