Mine are Japanese steel as well, brand Ultron, their 50 euro shears. They are razor-sharp (nicked myself a few times and boy that hurt, was not a regular cut). You can only get these in the EU, though.

Korbond multipurpose 5" scissors, 2.50 from Wilko ... though I only use those for S&D (and they've only ever touched my hair, not used for anything else!!; I have a 7" pair from Tweezerman for trims but I've only used them once and on extremely thin ends so I can't personally testify to their greatness yet. They were recommended by a longhair YouTuber, Lucy who does videos mainly on corsets!
Growing back to calf with hopefully some semblance of a hemline.
Picky scalp but easygoing hair, thank goodness

Muji hair scissors. They are a nice compromise between "real" professional shears and drugstore ones, so they are not very expensive but they feel very smooth, cutting is seamless and the joint is nice and tight.

I had about 5-10 euro scissors from the drugstore (a pair from Hema, and a pair from Kruidvat). They weren't bad, but they were (are long gone) not so sharp (not by a mile) as my pro-scissors which I got from a hairdresser shop here online.

I have thick hair, so whenever my mom cut my hair with those ones from the drugstore, the tiniest strand had to be "sawed" through. That is how you can tell they are way too blunt for hair.

These Ultron ones just slide right on through, no sawing. Just a smooth cut. It was definitely worth the 50 euro or something I spent on them. And I recently got a second pair, as the first ones were 10+ years old. They are still in use, but I am thankful for my backup (they went on major sale).

I would recommend any shears for S&D, but get a *good* pair, and spend at least about $50 or about €50 on them and get them from a pro hair cutting shop, or beauty supply store.

I totally wish I lived in the EU now... slightly envious, I am.

Don't be. I think Ultron is about the "only" brand we can get affordable (around 50 euro) scissors from. You guys have so much more choice!
