The flexis are a slightly special case in that the 8s can help to hold the middle of a bun (e.g. cinnabun, for me) but they work best if the bun is held mostly or fully with the stick. The flexi sticks are thinner and heavier than a stick I would choose though; I still want to try some of the largest ones with the stick detached and using an acrylic in its place. Most times I use a flexi the stick is doing the heavy lifting and the 8 is decorative; that is the case in my avatar.
For me, it has to be a tightly-wrapped, sturdy bun to work with a stick. In my avatar it a double-wrapped LWB which I think is also referred to as a 2-cycle LWB in the original thread. I use wispe's technique of wrap round the hand, wrap round the stem, then wrap round the hand again - more secure for me than wrapping round the hand twice before wrapping round the bun. These only really hold with a stick if I do them relatively high. Other buns such as the helix bun, l-infinity (wrapped, not twisted), er ... Neoma knot, mayyyybe the Nessa bun, equilibrium bun (if I can ever get it to look neat), braided LWB, braided nautilus, Jamie-Leigh (not that I can have my arms up long enough to french braid any more), treble clef (sort of, if the middle doesn't fall out) ... I think those are the buns I can do with a single stick. I much prefer a slightly wider stick and twisted or otherwise slightly bumpy sticks to hold better. If your sigpic is reflective of your current hair then we may have a similar kind of taper, and it's the thin ends wrapped so many times around the stem and held in place with the rest of the bulk of the hair that helps to stabilise buns, for me.
I will say that I rarely use a single stick; my go-to buns are held with forks and just so quick and comfy that most of the ones I've mentioned above are usually reserved for special occasions when I feel like - and have the energy for - making more of an effort. Usually the 'I want to do something different' buns are dressed up with my nicer forks, so stick-only buns really are a special effort

Thank you very much for the insight

I've worn relatively heavy and/or smooth single sticks in my hair that generally hold pretty well as long as I'm not moving around really vigorously or something like that. I think it's more down to the type or sturdiness of the bun, plus hair characteristics rather than stick characteristics (at least for me).
If I make a bun too loose, it won't hold as well. Once, a couple of years ago, I did have a bit of trouble getting buns to hold for a month or so right after a trim when my hemline was really blunt, but that isn't a problem for me now and doesn't seem like it would apply to your hair either. The stick (smooth, aluminum material) in my avatar tapers to a point along the length and eventually, it didn't hold as well in buns, which I think might've been a sign that I was outgrowing it, but prior to that it worked well. I actually haven't worn it recently, but maybe it might work again somehow? I have more taper in my hair now, even though it's longer.
Pretty much the only buns I wear are center-held ones; my preference is the nautilus bun. I don't think I had much luck with getting cinnabuns to hold as securely using a stick compared to nautilus buns. Also, braided and/or damp buns may hold better than unbraided ones.

Thanks for taking the time elodea, You too have pretty thick hair. I'm sure that is a signficant factor in hold.
While I've tried a few more times I haven't yet had my ah ha moment with hair sticks holding loose hair well. It's critical for me that my hair be secure, very secure, as I do move around, vigorously and a lot.
Bunning my braid rather than loose hair is way more secure so I may try that for a while to keep tail from swinging around, being sat on, etc . After cutting a chopstick to size, the best I've found so far
Keep growing!

If anyone is in Europe, I can really recommend these, they are great, the price is low and the shipping within EU is reasonable.
I didn't get them on etsy though, but in person on Charles bridge in Prague more than 2 years ago They are my most worn forks for sure. Probably mostly because of how simple the design is
