Default How to go from henna red to brown?

Does someone have any idea? I heard indigo makes your hair blackish, what I really don't want.
I don't want it to be much darker, just less of a red color, so brown or a cooler ash tone.
I know normal dye won't cover the henna, so has anyone experience with this kind of trouble?

    Regards,

You can't get an ash tone or cooler tone with henna or indigo, if you want it to be cooler you are going to have to go really dark, and then still you will see the warmth of the henna through it.

Normal dye can cover henna, depends on how dark it is. But you might have to go really dark if you don't get the henna out first (and that can cost you your hair, I had a chemical cut & burn removing henna).

    I would grow it out.

Yeah... that is why they say henna = permanent!

My hair is ashy brown. When I wanted to return to my natural color, the only thing that worked was growing then cutting it out. What henna removal I attempted didn't work (I didn't try bleach) and not much would cover it either.

You will probably not get rid of red tones with herbal colors. But, you could get a browner tone with an indigo based henna mixed with amla. I would try out a brown ready-made herbal color. But it might get a bit darker.
I've had good results in the past getting highlights on hennaed hair, and the hairdresser said she had also done several other colorings on hennaed hair without problems. Perhaps your best bet would be to go through a saloon first, perhaps ask if they have experience with coloring over henna. You could continue using herbal haircolors after perhaps you've gotten a few shades lighter color in the saloon and use an indigo based color. Indigo mixed with other herbs will not make it blackish, it just gives a cooler shade of color. Using indigo alone gives that blueish/black color. Hope this helps

I think going to a saloon first sounds like a lot of fun!

    Doesn't it though?

It isn't always true that you cannot dye over henna. I dyed over mine with brown (mind you, it did go rather dark) and it blocked all the gorgeous red.

I used a medium ash blond box dye on my henna and it went quite brown. It was a warm brown but still brown. I think they only way to completely cover the red would to be go very dark.

Yes, you could certainly cover it by going very dark. Part of the reason I'm so relaxed about experimenting with my colour is that I know, if it goes badly wrong, I can put indigo over it and go black.

I thought I read somewhere that someone used Buxus to make their hair more ashy but it I also read it doesn't last very long. Definitely strand test if you try it.

Yes, I always find that a light brown chem dye goes an indelible, non-fading mid brown over henna. Condition is good too.
