I took me 1-2 years.
In that time I grew out layers and length from Chin to waist, and with it more silver ...which was a different texture (fine/wispy/curlier) than the remaining darker hair.
I got to know what my hair did in certain weather conditions and how to manage it with moisture, oils, extended washes, BBB, air drying, protective styles.
My main S&C product line is for moisturizing and clarifying/brightening silver.
I use rosewater and glycerin spray, and mineral oil to manage wispies/dryness, and enhance my wurls/cut frizz.
Ocasionally I use a Garnier hairspray for my wispies, if I need a sleeker look for special occasions, and applied with a fine tooth comb or BBB.
ETA 12/3/17 I also love Biosilk Lite Serum; it is awesome for taming dryness and defining curls in high humidity![]()

Right now what I'm doing is working extremely well for my damaged hair. I haven't had natural hair since I was 12 so I imagine natural hair care is going to be a huge adjustment; as it is something I've never done as an adult. Even worse, I have no clue what I'm going to do when I have half natural half bleached hair.
I've had a lot of hair care routines, however lately my mom thaugh me a way to get my hair to look more nice, as it was a bit dry before, so i'd say around lass than a year to get to the perfect hair care way around my day.
I'll say 1-2 years, because I started changing things up before I became active here. I think I have it down, but need a few more weeks to see if I actually do or I'm just overly hopeful. I have noticed its usually about every 4 years I have to change up facial routines, hopefully I don't have to do that after I find my current hair routine....
About 2 years all told for me
I started by adjusting to better habits first (for me that meant requent microtrimming, sleep bunning, ditching the curling iron, modified CO washing) and I focused on establishing the good habits for about a year. Then it took about another year to get the products sorted (sulphate shampoos, rich conditioners, acidic rinses, Tangle Teezer). I probably could have nailed it all down more quickly but I purposely took my time to give experiments a fair chance to determine what was working and what wasn't.
I've got a very solid routine going now so if/when I get the itch to experiment further I feel I can do so without too much risk, knowing that if it goes off the rails I can just go back to what was working before![]()
▪daily washing▪monthly trimming▪top-down detangling▪sulfate shampoo down to the ends▪coney conditioner up to the roots▪henna and hibiscus▪worn down and loose on the regular▪
I dont really have one. I figure I will settle into one now that I have stopped the chemicals and have just decided to grow. One HG product for me that I will always use and love is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. I have gone through bottles upon bottles, no matter what the condition/length of my hair.
I love the idea of making my own shampoo and conditioner/rinse, but my heart just isnt in it. I need something easy... I was considering liquid soap like Dr Bronners (as mentioned in vegan thread) and ACV rinse in a spray bottle. I love how my hair looks and has volume when I use soap, but the shampoo bars seemed like more of a pain.
Anyway, heres to finding a routine that I love and can stick with

Man, I have been here for 5 years or more now, and I still dont have a solid idea of what my hair really genuinely likes.
I feel like hair changes, especially with the seasons and how stressed I am. My regimen always changes, the only thing perma banned from my hair is cones, mostly because I never saw anything good coming out of them with my hair type. Everything else gets switched in and out, I have SD so I have to switch it up.

My holy grail routine has changed and I've never had a routine that worked for more than a year or two. Sadly, at some point every perfect routine stopped being perfect for my hair. No idea if that's a common issue for others or not.
I've been all routes and found long term happy hair with each routine; sulfate/cone free with natural oils and butters, then back to sulfates and just about every cone I could find + the ROO method, now it's cone and (mostly) sulfate free and the LOC method.
Sometimes I wish my hair had come with an instruction manual......
