Default February 2016: Crochet Braid/Chain Bun

    Original inspiration and discussion thread.

Ok, this one uses a ton of length. But fear not, if you can make only a few loops it makes a lovely bun refered to in older style lists as the Chain Bun.

Where will you run with this idea?

Mine, the first loop held with mini claws for balance.

With my length and thickness, I only got 2 loops, which didn't photograph well at all since it looked like a crooked knot of hair. I'll see if I can get a picture of the bun.

OK, so this was interesting. Keep in mind I have curly, thick-ish hair.

First attempt: whole hair, loose. I got 2 loops, it looked like a fuzzy chignon after I'd been rained on then dragged through a hedge backwards.

Second attempt: hair parted down the middle, loose. I got up to 3 loops on each pigtail, but they still looked like stumpy, frizzy buns.

Third attempt: hair parted down the middle, braided. Much easier to manage, I got three loops on each side, they were totally lopsided because I parted my hair anyhow while watching the vid, but I can cry partial victory.

    Now, don't laugh...

I might try with my whole hair braided, next.

I got a really great bun the first time I tried it, but couldn't replicate it again:

I also tried pigtails, thinking maybe they could be pinned across the nape of the neck to make a low bun, but it looked funny. My hair has a lot of taper and shorter hairs, and I didn't want to cause tangles crocheting my hair again and again, so I stopped after the third attempt that for some reason didn't come out nice like the first try. It's not exactly the most gentle method of putting up my hair, but I'll probably try the bun again at some point, because I really did like it.

This is the best idea ever! I am doing this tomorrow. I don't think I'll get much more than a bun or updo, though, because I've got KL hair that's sooooo thick.
