    Did I get it right?

Two fingers was too tight, three fingers was a bit loose so I had to use an oversize stick.

So here is a tutorial on how to do my accidental bun. Does anyone have a name for it, or is it a new bun?

Glad others are discovering this handy bun! Here is mine.

One of the tricks to making this bun sleek is after you have secured it with a stick, to take the section that is on top crossing from one loop to the other and sort of spreading it across the whole bun. But whatever it looks like, the things I love about this bun are how sturdy this construction is and how quick it goes up.

Sarahlabyrinth, when you did the first loop and then wrapped around again I thought "Link Bun" but the final product was quite different so I had to go watch the Link Bun tutorial again to see what the construction difference is. Your bun doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with. I'll have to give it a try!

Sarahlabyrinth, for me your discovery will always stick in my head as "The Accidental Bun"! It's lovely, I will have to give it a try later today and see if I can get my hair to cooperate.

I was trying to explain this as well! You can get quite a different look if you don't "spread" that section if it isn't nicely spread over the whole bun already.

Charybdis, I first did this bun at about hip length.

Thanks, Spidermom! I did finally get it to work by making the loops as small as I could. It was very comfortable and stayed put all day!

This is pretty much the only bun I wear and have been wearing for the past couple of years. I can practically do it in my sleep. Of course, today would be that once-in-a-while post-henna day and I've just put it up with spin pins because brushing isn't an option.

My hair is thin and long, so I find I have quite a bit of length to wrap. One thing I do is to put three of my (skinny) fingers in, and use a wide fork. Another is to braid before bunning, which eats up some of the length and delineates the bun lines a bit more. A third trick I've just recently been doing is to put a third loop over the first loop before wrapping around the base, and then if I use a fork with a more ostentatious top on the single-loop side then it sort of "balances" and I don't have to wrap the ends so many times around the base.

I probably need to take pictures.

Thanks, spidermom! Sarahlabyrinth's accidental bun is so cute, though looking at it makes me wonder if I wrapped the first loop the wrong way because it doesn't quite look like what everyone else is posting, but I can't remember what I did.

Whatever you did - it works beautifully.
