Yes, I've had success casting resin onto wooden items. I noticed you were using some of the purple silicone putty in your molds, two other materials that work well for use-single molds are blue tape and milk cartons. The red wax from cheese can also be used for small dams. I cast a resin top for a "magic staff" costume prop using milk carton pieces held in place with hot glue and blue tape, which worked out reasonably well, LOL.
If you are making a stick and want a short section of resin for a topper, you can wrap the top of your stick in blue tape, creating a tube into which the resin can be poured. Or lay the base of a fork on a flat surface on top of a layer of blue tape and fold it up to create sides. Be careful with corners and seams as the resin will escape if it can. Red wax is great for blocking those spots up, but wax by itself will melt if used alone when exposed to the heat of the curing resin.
You can also use that silicone putty to mold tops. You can either cast the tops and then attach them to the wood after they are fully cured, or you can balance your wood in contact with the wet resin while it cures, but it can be tricky to keep the wood straight. Here is an example from a gift swap a while back.
