self made hairtoys thread

Let us know how it turns out in the end. I am always interested in pros and cons of different finishes.

I will. Now I am letting the varnish dry well, while I try to remember to buy that very fine sandpaper or whatever I'll end up buffing it with.

From the Poplar fork wood, I had cut 2 thin rectangulary pieces to make hairsticks and I began sanding and next thing I knew, this happened:



Can you guess what I am making ? Of course, it still in a very rough state, but I think you can see the direction it's heading. I only got about halfway through last night so I'll continue tonight and see how it goes. I am not sure if I want to tempt fate and try to make a pair of these or just be happy if one comes out right *shrugz*

So...this is the spiral all the way sanded and smooth with a first coat of paste wax. I like this finish for this toy since it leaves it really buttery smooth.



I am also doing henna today so since I have to sit still for a few hours, I figured I'd start on a new spiral and try to fix a few things. Lessons learned are: the stick above is a bit thinner than I'd like so this time around, I am going to work on making the stick a bit chunkier and the coils not so close together. Anyways, neko sent me some assorted bits of wood during a past swap and I found a lovely piece of Purpleheart in the bag so I started marking it up and this time, will sand less vigorously:



I am really excited about this one

So today I finished the Purpleheart Spiral and added a Larimar cabochon. I also experimented with the finish a bit. OMG does this wood come to life when finished:



It feels so smooth. I can't stop touching it
