bparnell75 I love that green seahorse one!

Ada-banana those are gorgeous, my eye was also caught by the macrame slide.

I haven't posted in here before, so I thought I would share my collection of hairsticks.

The black fork is made from a small piece of ebony that used to be part of a violin fingerboard. Definitely the hardest wood I've ever worked with! The pair of black sticks with metal embellishments were made from a pair of take-out chopsticks that I finished/painted and added the decoration. Red one is another chopstick, but that one I just shortened it and sanded down the point. The white flowers on the longest one are made from paper. Obviously, it is saved for indoor occasions. The rest of them are just whittled from poplar or pine wood.

Eventually I hope to get some better woodworking tools than a pocket knife and sandpaper.

Very nice collection, Linden! If I had to choose one it would be the cute dagger

These are incredible! I'd never guess you lack tools. I love how you repurposed the chopsticks, the stick with bead line in the middle, and of course, the dagger.

OMG that paper one is AMAZING! How did you even do that? I wonder if you could make something like that out of aluminum foil or something so it would be weatherproof...
    They're all beautiful. Very impressed.

(if this discussion already exists somewhere, could I get a link? Sorry I can't find it)

Flexis feel a bit expensive to me (college student budget and whatnot) and seem like they'd be relatively easy to make. I found some hard temper steel wire on Amazon for cheap in a bunch of gauges. Seems to me that you could get a thinner wire (but still relative stiff) for the actual figure 8, then a thicker wire to make into the attached stick. I have some supply of beads already, but polymer clay centerpieces could be super cute, and that's very cheap and easy to do as well.
Has anyone tried this? Or some other fake flexi method?
Part of my hesitation to buy from the actual site is that I don't know the right sizes for different styles. Whereas $20 worth of wire and polymer clay looks like enough to make many flexis of many sizes.

I noticed my self made acrylic top sticks were getting dull. Combination of bathroom moisture and dust??
any way I removed the old lacquer on them with solvent and a tooth brush and recoated them with a
high quality polyurethane. Now they are all bright and shiny just like new.
