    I carve my spirals with a Dremel, holding the wood in a vice, but I sand them by hand and apply a lot of pressure. A few of my early ones broke during sanding because I’d carved them too thin for the wood in question. You may need to go thicker.

    I use a similar method to neko, but I don't use a vice. I kind of freehand with the Dremel and use a small rotary sanding drum. The final sanding/smoothing/polishing is done by hand. I go back to the Dremel to buff out wax once it's hardened.
