My theory that a two step process might work is actually based on your theory. Like hibiscus, indigo (as far as I can gather from my own reading) doesn't impart permanent colour, on hair, on its own. It gives a temporary 'blue rinse' on light coloured hair, but it washes out. I've come across claims (with photos) that hibiscus temporarily stains light coloured hair lilac/purple. If no-one else has tried it, I'm happy to be a guinea pig, in any case. Even if it only tones the orange down a tiny bit, that's a tiny bit that I've achieved without another curl-loosening henna treatment. And if it doesn't affect the colour at all, my hair will have had another conditioning treatment, and it won't complain about that.
I absolutely LOVE your hair...both the texture and colors!

    Hello,
I guess my signature picture could do but, that was two weeks or so from the first henna application onto ash blonde hair.

Neoma, what kind of henna did you you use for copper color in your siggie pic?

Cyclamen, that pic was taken years ago, so I'm making an educated guess... I believe that it was Jamila, only because at that time I was just using whatever I could find at the Indian grocery.

Jamila makes two sifts: the one that's available at the Indian groceries and one that is much finer that's available online at Henna Sooq (and maybe other places, too).

As luck would have it, the latter is on sale at Henna Sooq. It looks like it's around 50% off.

    Neoma, thank you!
How long did you leave it on hair?
So tempting, but I already have two different hennas to try. I need to get on with hairball testing.

SwanFeathers, it's cool you got burgundy tones without going too dark. Did you use Red Raj?

Cyclamen, I'm glad that you're going to do hairball testing.

My natural hair color is dark brown with reddish highlights. Yours is much lighter. Your henna color is likely to be very different than mine.

Having said that, I generally leave henna on for four hours. Also, I henna my hair from roots to tips every time, so my hair may have been at saturation point in that pic. (Read: multiple layers of henna until the henna can't impact the color in the length any more.)

Please let us know how it turns out.
