If you would be willing to use 2 clips, this bun might work: Folded Braid with clips(video tutorial)
Or the clip bun with one large clip. I did it with loose hair but you could braid it and do the same thing: The Clip Bun(video tutorial)
Maybe these will give you some ideas. When the hair gets too thick and heavy for the clip to go around all of the hair, you use the clip in a different way that holds only some of the hair and the rest gets wrapped around the clip

    Nice. Beautiful collection.
The Goody clips were two for the price of one for a package of three yesterday in Walgreen's so I picked two pkgs up, remembering the recommendation. They also had a lot of other clips on sale-- i saw some bear claws? And a lot of those scunci no slip grips which just stick in my hair. I don't know if the sale was more than one week though.
I have got pretty clips at the dollar store before, will try to post tomorrow. Still haven't done my grading--but procrastinating on LHC is so very much more interesting lol...
You can pretty much tell when I have other work I should be doing--when you see my name, posting all over the place in threads that have no relation to anything about me, blonde hair, fine hair, kinds of hairtoys, I haven't got, polls I already answered...
I'm a master time waster, its really a pity.

Claw clips are about the only thing I use. They keep my hair up at work and are gentle enough to not damage my delicate hair

Wow that's great This is JJJ I am so happy this bun works for you. I LOVE CLAW CLIPS! I have fancy ones but they hurt and are heavier. I have tried many kinds and have found that the Goody Brand ones with 9 teeth are the best ever. I need the clips to look like a "C" when open. No zig zag clips are comfy to me.They are also so light weight and the 9 teeth cover more scalp area which means less pulling. Since the clips come only in 3 colors, I have started hand painting some or adding some little flower decorations to a few. I mainly love the clips for the ease and comfort for everyday.
I can count on them holding all day. I have a few videos using them. I also have a newer Pretzel Bun Tutorial for 2014 using the Goody Clips.Your link shows my original Pretzel Bun with shorter hair (and the clips were not great in the 1st video) There are NO silicone grips or pointy spikes in these. The ears (part you hold with fingers) is also smaller compared to a lot of others I have. I feel silly with the clips sticking out far on some of the fancier ones. I rather use more muted clips and make the focus more on the hair and not the accessory. These clips are my go to accessory and I have several backups in case they discontinue making them. I have used these for about 4 years and only broke 1.In the video I show the clips up close.
YAY! I almost shrieked when I saw that your awesome huge collection of claw clips mostly contains lots of clips in that Goody Clip design with 9 teeth that I always liked. You've always been my absolute hair idol, so I'm happy to see that you like that claw-clip, too.
I think this Goody claw-clip is really good because of: 1) big exposed metal spring 2) big long barrel (against the overall size). Many rare and expensive claw clips seem to have huge ornamental sides but actually small barrel and spring, making them less sturdy and easier to break, but this simple Goody one seems pretty sturdy. I should definitely go buy those, since I don't have my old ones anymore.

But I have a question: do you worry about hair getting caught in the spring or in the seams on the plastic mold at all? Is there a way of sanding that plastic down without creating even more snaggy areas?

Also, I thought I'd share these videos about how to select claw-clips: they don't discuss the aesthetics, but the functionality and the size/spring issues.
