Very early in my decision to grow out my hair, I remember thinking (and this is pretty much word-for-word), "I will grow my hair out and wear it like a cape!"

    I want to look like a mermaid/elf/mythical creature/princess/anime character/Renaissance painting
This is the most important reason for me, that's why I love long hair. It looks somehow mystical and magical.

For warmth, to wear as a blanket/coat/scarf
You don't know how grateful I am for my long hair in winter

I love the feeling of my hair brushing against my body, lower and lower down
Yeees, I would feel naked without it

To prove (to myself or others) that I can, or out of a sense of competition or defiance
Also I love getting compliments and comments about how long it has got

To look more femme, and less butch or boyish
Also this, I feel it's more feminine (as I see it)

As a preface, when I was much younger (19-21 or so) and prior to severe onset of male pattern baldness (MPB), I had fairly thick hair that thinned to terminal length at my waist. After more thinning, and facing a job search upon graduation, I cut my hair short at 23. I resumed growing it again at age 40 despite progressing MPB, but it's too thin now to provide warmth or the same feeling of thick hair on my skin. It's also not very long anymore.

So that I can wear nothing, yet cover everything with my hair

Long ago I got a glimpse of that at the neck and shoulders and it was very nice.

For warmth, to wear as a blanket/coat/scarf

It definitely helped keep me warm although that was a double-edged sword in hot weather. It was delicious to wear it under a coat in cold weather so it would keep my ears and neck warm like a scarf.

I really want to become (or now enjoy being) an old man with long, flowing silver/white hair

Still waiting for that mythical baldness cure I've been hoping for during the past 20+ years. Propecia has at best slowed down the slide into baldness. I'm getting more gray hair though.

I love the feeling of my hair brushing against my body, lower and lower down

That was great at the time but all too slow! Now it's just a distant memory. The thin hair I now have is more likely to cause tickling or itching on my back if I'm not wearing a shirt.

Me too! It's so cool when I have a dream where my hair is much longer than IRL.

As someone who's never had hair as long as I currently do now, it's such an experience! I was always envious of fairytale characters with gorgeous flowing tresses, but for some reason (as I'm sure many of you related to at some point in your lives as well) I would always end up feeling a bit too scissor-happy once my hair started to annoy me and become increasingly difficult to tame.

I've come too far to give up now, and I'm happy to say that I've surpassed a few of my long hair celebrity idols by several inches already (Isn't it strange to see a photo of your hair goal and realize that you've since accomplished it? I look at Avril Lavigne's 'Alice' MV photo shoots now and can't help but think that it's not as long as I thought it was when my hair was much, much shorter), and I've taken to finding even longer-haired idols for my Rapunzel aspirations!

I want it to be like a blanket for me, to keep me warm and cover my torso, so my open sundresses and tank tops look less revealing
And I want to look like a renaissance princess
