yeah, that's when you chop it off at the lowest common denominator (aka the shortest layer).
I had something similar happen years and years and years ago. Luckily I had more curl back then and it just made my hair really full....or at least I convinced myself of that.

Augh... I had one of those once. Took months to grow out and it looked awful, even with the wavy hair to cover it up a little.
