Default The official hair scissors thread!

If you have questions about hair scissors please post them here. I noticed a lot of splattered threads but no coral of knowledge.

Myself, I have Japanese steel scissors and they are the sharpest around (I just nicked myself trying to help mom cut her hair). Just the very edge of it, and I'm bleeding like a pig. Yeah, that happened.

But if you are going for shears, do give the Japanese steel ones a go. It is a good thing to look out for. They are razor sharp.

Mine are 10+ years old, get used about 3 to 4 times a year, if that, and are still as sharp as ever.

The brand I have is Ultron, they are entry level pro-shears that you can get in the EU, for around 50 euro. If you want the shop I bought them at; this is the Ultron catalog (it is a Dutch store):

If you've gotten good ones, do share, where you got them, how much they cost, so we have a wealth of knowledge here.

If you find a thread to merge in with this, please report this first post and the thread you would like merged with this official thread. Thanks!

Mine are Equinox Professional brand from Amazon. I like them but you have to make sure it's wound tight or else snipping can CAUSE a split!

the best pair of scissors I ever used in a salon setting were by the brand Washi. Unfortunately, they were stolen from me. If I have some extra cash at the end of the semester this year, I will probably purchase a new pair.

Fromm also makes good scissors, and are in a much lower price bracket.

Stay away from ambidextrous scissors, they cut poorly no matter which hand you use. As a lefty, my first few pairs were ambidextrous because that was all I could find at shows or supply stores. When I finally purchased left handed scissors, I never went back.

Oh yeah, and stay away from ebay.

I once tried buying my "Japanese steel" ones from there; as blunt as you can get, even blunter than my old drugstore shears.

Don't think you can get Japanese steel for less than 50 euro / dollars. Just... don't go there.

I have shears from Ultron aswel, very happy with them. I didn't use them for an actual trim yet because I have been in no trimming threads since I bought them but used them for some S&D and they are really really sharp. They retailed for €59,29 but I got them with a 20% off discount code.

I have the purple and blue ones and they are really cute. I keep them in a little pouch.

The hair scissors I got are Japanese steel, from a Japanese brand “Kai”, and they’re SO sharp, although that may be because they are new. I did a little reading up, while I couldn’t find much about the hair scissors that wasn’t written in Japanese, the reviews for their quilting and sewing scissors are good. Hopefully that means my hair scissors will perform decently enough, guess I will find out in a few years. They were about US$30

Those are sooo beautiful! I have a pair of Kamisori shears, but they were "only" $220 on sale for $110. I was blown away the first time I used them!
