Ive been giving myself head massages recently (as per the inversion method) to stimulate extra growth. My expectation is not the extreme growth many claim for the inversion method, but I figure a good head massage can't hurt! When I do it, I noticed significant fall out - maybe it's just the whole day's worth of shedding in one moment (not sure). Has anyone else experienced this? Also, will the shedding (included my previous high fall out from a stressful job) grow back in as strong healthy hair as I'm taking care of it and my body/nutrition?

If you are using oils, then yes, many people experience heavy shedding if they put oil (or conditioner) on their scalp. Seems like most people, after they make the connection, stop with the oil - although I've read some people theorizing that maybe the hair fall is temporary and not serious. I know I would stop anything that makes my hair fall.

I used oil once, but not since then. My hair tends to be kind of oily anyway and I only wash my hair 2x per week. I'm not that rough with the massage. I figure if the hair is falling out with the mild massage i'm giving, it would probably fall out anyway.

I'm just hoping that I'll get my thickness back. I was 3" hair diameter (I even wished for thicker hair at that time) when I was first able to put my hair in a full ponytail (about a year ago); now I"m just over 2.5". As that comes back in I want it to be strong enough to stay in my head as my hair gets longer. I'm trying to do some protective styling as it grows, have just been able to do a super short braid (but it gets the job done), not quite ready for a cinnamon roll bun.

I agree completely and think this is great advice. My hair sheds badly with any type of oil or silicones on my scalp. It's like it suffocates my hair follicles and the hair falls out.

Yeah, don't plan to use oil frequently...just want to get the blood flowing

Welcome Rsunny! FOr protective styles while I sleep I just french braid. I look at it as great braid practice since only my husband will see it. Back when I first became a a member on LHC I did do a bun on top of my head. Everyone is different but I discovered the hard way that I was pretty active in the night with rubbing my head on the pillow maybe? And I got lots of breakage right at the crown from hairs being pulled and broken because they were pulled up into a bun. maybe a looser bun would work better because lots of people bun at night with no problem. you could also look into a silk sleep cap. But, now I just french braid it. That is a nice flat braid that feels comfortable to sleep on.

I wish I could offer you some solid answers, but alas I can't. Maybe you could experiment with the massages for few weeks, and if the shedding doesn't decrease, then consider stopping if it bothers you. It might be good idea to continue monitoring your ponytail too, maybe every few months. If the hair loss continues, this kind of data would be helpful for your doctor to know.

As for hair styles, you might be able to make french twists (the normal vertical version, or a horizontal version along the nape), and maybe folded twin braids (braid losely so there is no visible part, fold the right hand braid towards left ear, fold and pin, then fold the left hand braind under or over the right braid, fold and pin), or several buns (maybe 2-3 buns on top of eachother or next to each other) or french/dutch braids.

I move a lot in my sleep....due to night sweats (15 years now).....I cannot imagine using a night cap, I fear I would burst into flames. I try to be gentle with massage and I have never experienced hair loss from it even with oil....but that doesn't mean I won't at sometime. I would definitely stop if that happened. For now I prefer a twist for sleeping over a bun even tho I sometimes bun......maybe a bun will work better as my hair grows.

I'm sorry for how I twist and turn from subject to subject. There is a term I think for that type of thinking....it is how I talk also.

Oh yeah I forgot to write about the massaging technique. With scalp massages it's better to place your fingertips on the scalp and then move your scalp in small circular, or up and down motions, place your finger tips in another spot and again move your scalp. So you shouldn't so much move/glide your fingers against your scalp, rather you'd like to keep your fingers pressed against scalp and move the scalp itself.

    That is what I do....
...but I will also do a very light 'scratching' with fingertips ..not nails. It is really too light to be called scratching. I am very tender headed. I always hated having my hair washed at a salon. Someone would be scratching and digging at my scalp with their claws and I would be thinking I was supposed to like that and hoping i didn't throw up on them from the discomfort. Someone must have taught them that but it would make me ill. And I didn't want to cringe and ask them to stop as I didn't want to offend them ....especially since they would soon take their scissors to my hair.
