I was thinking some more about the variations in shape/size of moon forks, since I'm going to try and make a smaller one out of polymer clay. I think the opening between the points should definitely be at least wide enough to fit one's ponytail size in. Other than that, I wonder how shallower vs deeper curves in the moon's shape affect how well it holds? I previously surmised that moons with a flatter cross section would be less likely to turn in the bun and point outwards/directly back.

I find that wide moons don’t stay in well, because they are wide at the centerpoint and then taper in more on each side.

Meaning the thickness/cross-section of the crescent? That's interesting; since I only have one moon I haven't been able to actually test if certain variations on the shape work better than others.

I guess either way. Fat in middle either way is bad news for me. It’s like there is a big space made there in the bun by the fat part, and then the tapering part can slide in that gap made by the wide part then it is on its way to falling out of the bun.

Hi, do you know the other Moon thread in this forum already?

I have made a little collection of hints and hacks there, here.

And that this posting won't stay without any picture, here is a knotted Disk Bun. I knotted the two strands, then I made the Disk Bun.
