My length is basically almost shoulder and will be for a while because I’ve been trimming just the bottom layer, regularly to get to one length blunt.

I’d say my very shortest lengths are almost chin. I’ve just accepted it’s going to take time because I cut it so short last April. That’s fine and it looks ok in the headband now. Like I’ve got some hair! I love wearing it off my face too. So it’s all good. It’s not stressing me because I just stick to my plan and don’t have any negative thoughts about it. I trim half an inch off the bottom at the end of each month and I wash it once a week. Job done.

I’m so glad your resolve is as strong as ever.
Thanks for the congrats, Lainey! I am determined this time, lol.

It sounds like you have a great plan of action, good for you. Slow and steady wins the race, and is much less stressful, if you ask me. Shoulder length means that you can play around with small jaw clips and barrettes??? I hope so, this is when you start to have some fun with longer hair. You should join the Microtrimming and Maintaining Cub, if you haven't already.

I will look for the link and come back and post it.

    Here it is, Lainey.

Lainey and luluj, I'm happy to hear reports of the progress that you are both making so far! It sure does take a lot of patience but it's so worthwhile sticking to your goal. I'm looking forward to seeing photos of your milestones!

I am well past waist now and I find it very easy to care for my hair at this length. I enjoy choosing a hair accessory every morning and putting it into an updo or braid.

I've decided to go for classic length so I'll continue growing for quite awhile yet. That said, I'm looking forward to maintaining my length one day with regular trims.

My last length shot was in August so I'm going to take a comparison photo and post it then. I know that I've lost some thickness this past year but I've also gained length so I'm pleased and continuing to enjoy the growing process.

    Hi, bokeh.

Thanks, my progress has surprised even myself, lol. Once I am at APL, curls and wurls and all, I will surely take a photo, I will need to celebrate in style! :

Classic will be lovely on you, bokeh. Your hair is so healthy and the colour is gorgeous, you will need to celebrate, also.

Aw thanks for the link luluj, so thoughtful of you. I am just sticking with the headband for now. My hair is the fine, straight sort, so I don’t think I’ve quite enough volume yet for ponytails etc. (Well ok I just went jogging with it in a pony)!

Oh luluj, the ease of hair styling now it’s a bit longer, is absolutely fantastic. In any event, I feel like I’m over the very awkward stage. Shortly, I’ll be shopping for a few toys, for sure. What’s your favourite site(s) for such fripperies, lol. Or should that be necessities?!

Hi bokeh. Thanks for your encouragement. I’ll post a shot in a few weeks comparing the back with June last year. Your hair is an encouragement to us all. Your hair is thick, I know, and I just wondered where you feel you’ve lost thickness. I feel mine has possibly lost some at the front, but it’s not deterring me.

    Thanks luluj.

You'll be so happy that you took photos of your progress. The long haired photo that you saw of me is the first length photo that I took since I started growing so I missed documenting all the stages. Add to that the fact that I avoid the camera and there isn't much to look back at to measure and appreciate progress photographically. I'm glad that I took that one last summer so that I can do a comparison of this year's growth.

It makes me smile to think of you jogging with your ponytail bouncing cheerfully in the sunlight! I hope that you are having a beautiful day where you are.

I like the Etsy shops for hair toys. I recommend Baerreis and 60th Street for wooden forks and Quattro for metal forks. Other favorites are Furnivals Workshop, Lady Idun, OverTheHawaiianMoon, Windsongs Attic, ChurchStreetAndLove, Ficcare for their Maximas clips and Lila Rose for their Flexi 8's. Eaduard and KeTyLo both have excellent products but be prepared to wait, worry and nag if you order from either of them. It's worthwhile to get quality accessories and if well chosen you only 'NEED' one or two. I've gone way beyond 'need' myself.
Oh and visit the Wear Everything Once thread to see photos of hair toys in action. There are also individual threads for most of the sellers.

I'm looking forward to seeing your comparison pic! As for my shedding; it's funny that I didn't notice it happening. I measured my ponytail dimension and saw that I had lost at least a half inch (from about 4" or more to 3 1/2"). It's very difficult to get a dependable pony measure but I happened to have a beautiful barrette that I purchased online several years ago that was much too small for the thickness of my hair. Now it fits perfectly so it's clear that there has been a loss over the last year. I don't see thinning at my scalp and my hair still seems thick.

I need to show my mom this thread or something similar. She’s early 50’s and embracing her natural grey streaks, but seems convinced that just because she’s a certain age she needs to chop her beautiful hair into a bob. She wants me to do braids on her lately but doesn’t have enough hair to really braid.

She does oil treatments sometimes because her mom did it to her hair when she was little and I’ve gotten her into using scrunchies and soft ties, so the foundation is already laid for getting into natural haircare. It’s her hair to do whatever she wants with, but I think she would look lovely with longer hair. Maybe you ladies and your gorgeous hair would be the an inspiration. I know it’s inspiring to me to see older women rocking long natural hair despite what society says about it .

We would all love to welcome her to our little group if she decides to grow her hair longer. Sometimes it seems like embracing the grays and growing longer go hand-in-hand.

Whatever she decides it's certain that she is a lucky lady with a wonderful supportive daughter!

    You are so welcome, Lainey.

I agree, longer hair is easier, it really is. Glad that you are over the awkward stage, I know from experience how long it seems to take to get through it all.

Hmmm I have to say necessities, lol. My first real hair accessory was a size small flexi-8. My hair is fine and not at all thick, so the small size is ideal, even at almost APL. I can just do a simple twist and it holds all of my hair up, no problem. They also come in extra small, which I would like for half-ups. As far as sticks and forks, I much prefer forks, they just seem to hold better, for me. The 60th St. hair forks are, in my opinion, the nicest and most secure hair forks out there. I have four of them and they get the most wear, hands down.

Now, all that said, I love the simple claw clip. The ones from France Luxe are superb quality and there are so many lovely styles to choose from.

This is such a nice post to read, Handel'sWig.

Do show your Mom this thread, we will do our best to convince her that age is just a number and that she can wear her hair long and natural and be very proud of it.
