I've got a zillion barrettes! (Only half-kidding.) To those who consider them damaging, I haven't had issues if I carefully remove them rather than yanking them out.
I sometimes wear a barrette either above or below a bun, depending on the position, to add some interest and get more use out of my collection. I have also fastened small, beautiful barrettes in the center of a bun. I think it looks pretty!
What a pretty collection you have, Mely!
mely: second from the top, the open celtic silver knot. Where's that from? I've been wanting something like that.

Did anybody see these barrettes on Etsy? So colorful, and so expensive. I couldn't believe how tempted I was, even though i don't use barrettes now. I think barrettes are the best thing to show off Dymondwood. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id...ion_id=5122794
I bought it from a store in Victoria (British Columbia) that sells Irish things. It is made of pewter, and is quite heavy. Here is a similar barrett:

Oooh! Blue plaid!!!!
I LOVE seeing other people's hair toys. I LOVE hair toys...
I wonder if that's a St. Justin Pewter barrette? (click the link on the drop down menu for hairslides.)
The one that's second from the bottom in the second row is definitely a St. Justin's design! I have the same one, which I bought from the British Museum giftshop last spring. The others above it (not the top one, though), also look like they're made by that company.
I have another design by them -- Celtic, but swirly. I will post.
These only hold half-ups for me, though.
(Thanks, Tabitha, for the suggestion of FL volume barrette. I think your hair must be close in thickness to mine, so I will try.)
Yes--five of them are St. Justin's barrettes. Here is the exact one:

They are very sturdy and well made. I wore those barrettes day in and day out for years, and they never showed any sign of wear.
