I've been having the same thing happen, and when it happens, I get the same thing TBB.
I get it for several hours every afternoon. Because of that I have unconsciously shied away from getting on during those times. Because of that I tend to split my time between the morning and evening.
why does the site keep going off?

Because the server is busy. Or it reaches its load level. Quite why it's doing that so often lately we don't know yet.
