Ooh...I wonder if a metal stitch holder for knitting cables would work....

Would a bun cage be a good option maybe?

Good idea! I have something similar to that...the Magic Stretchy Hair Comb, I think it is - maybe that would work?

Yeah, that would work! I've certainly seen some buns around here secured with those.

Also sturdy U-pins (like mini forks) and spin pins are great for securing buns and don't stick out. You can also find some that are decorated.

Mod hat off. Mod hat on. Don't make me wear the mod hat, it messes up my hair. *grin*

What about a french comb, maybe 7 tooth?

    I love a decorative comb!

I've been meaning to buy some of them for awhile now - will definitely have to look into those, too =)

What about if the hair stick (or fork) is exactly the right length for the width of your bun? Nothing looking out to harm anyone. Sticks are the easiest hairtoys to make yourself so you wouldn't even need to invest much at all in longer ones as your hair grows, you could make them pretty blunt anyway, and maybe your Mum would come round to the idea in the meantime anyway.
Length goal well and truly met, now just seeing how it grows ...
Picky scalp but easygoing hair, thank goodness

I'm klutzy and have still never even come close to harming myself or someone else with a hairstick. If the hairstick is secure, it's not going to fly out if you spin. If it does, it's likely to hit the floor, not another person, and even if it hits someone else, the odds that it will fly out just right to arrow into their eye (really the only way it could hurt them) are pretty slim, I'm thinking. If you fall and are hitting your head (which you would need to do to be injured by a hairstick), you'll probably be more hurt from that than a hairstick (and if you're prone to falling and hitting your head, I would be more worried about that fact than what you want to wear in your hair).

(I once got lectured by a lady while in line at a store, though, about my DPN hairstick. She insisted that it would impale my brain if, say, I fell down and hit my head on a curb. I told her if I ever hit my head on a curb, I'm in pretty big trouble anyway and it's unlikely a hairstick will add much to that kind of damage...)
