I loosen op tangles as soon as I find them if I have time right there and I brush my hair every day to avoid future tangles. In the long run I think mega tangles do more damage then a bit of detandeling now and again.
Detangling everyday, too much combing and manipulation
Detangling less often, tangles are harder to comb out
I only finger-comb, so I rarely get any breakage when I detangle. However, If I didn't detangle every day, then I think the tangles would just get bigger and probably end up causing a lot of breakage.

I don't comb at all, any tangles are taken care of by washing. The rinsing takes any knots out. When I started this, I noticed a huge improvement in the amount of split ends. It is a lot better for my type of hair.

I finger comb in the shower. Use a comb or occasionally my brush when I need it smooth for styles.
My hair would be a knotted up, dreaded up mess if I didn't detangle a couple times a day. I always detangle in the morning when I get up. I detangle before I wash it. I detangle before any styling sessions. And I detangle before bed unless I've worn it in a braid that day and I'm leaving it in overnight.
I am not here to decorate your world
I detangle in the morning and before I go to bed... My hair tangles so easily I couldn't go without combing at least twice a day sometimes more. But I don't have a lot of breakage or excessive shedding. With that said I'm sure not detangling is what's best for some people, we all have different hair needs!
Straightened.
im a chronic detangler. I have to do it because i hate the way my hair looks when its all tangled, also i love running my fingers through my hair and i cant do that when theres tangles in it
Hoping to reach waist by Oct 2011!
I wet my brush to avoid the poof that others speak of, because I generally brush my hair multiple times a day.
there is, of course, the random case of 'I don't feel like brushing my hair today' that stretches into three or four straight days, but I notice the snarls are really no worse than if I waited the one day.
My hair gets real tangled if i dont detangle every day. So i detangle a couple times a day if i dont have it up.If its up its not so bad.
I usually do a solid detangling comb twice a day - once right before I go to sleep and once when I wake up. My wife only detangles once a day or less and I can really tell that her detangling sessions are much more onerous and damaging than mine even though we have similar hair.
