I wrote a tutorial aaaages ago on a braid that looks like the braids in medieval and renaissance paintings.
It should be somewhere in the articles section.

My hair always falls through a gibson tuck as well! I've had success with putting the bundled up hair into a sort of doubled up hairnet, then putting it in the "pocket"...I was able to wear it for almost the entire day!

Made it to terminal length at mid-calf, now I'm maintaining at my favorite length: Classic!

To stop the hair coming through on a Gibson pull it half through the band thenntwistbthe band and pull the rest through so it is in 2 loops. Won't fall through then.

I threw my hair into another pair of loose Victory Rolls, this time with a false crown braid at the back.

I parted my hair on the side from the front all the way back, and had one braid in the "crown" braid thicker than the other as a stylistic choice. I tend to think I look better with a side part with Victory Rolls, but I'll have to try them symmetrically sometime.

Crown braids WERE a hairstyle in the 1940's. Several stars wore them, but, like that famous woman whose name I can't currently remember, the braids look padded in the Hollywood glamour shots. The Normals wearing them didn't seem to pad them, though, so we're normal either way.

I went looking for other images of the hairstyle I showed last time still (found them, but they're huge, and rather than resize them, I went out to take a new one. I'm so normal.)

If you want photos of the last style, too, I'll get on it.

Bonus: Edwardian Gibson Girl, complete with Pompadour:

Fantastic hair! I love your blouse and make-up, you look beautiful!

Here's my hair! I've been getting into the 1940s and sewing a lot more 1940 style items lately. My clothes aren't exactly period, but I got better at victory rolls. It just takes practice.
