I had a bad experience at a Dutch hair salon under my bf's house a bit over a year ago, mostly my own fault, I asked for layers and it ended up quite short, it wasn't even the layers I asked for on the picture, however, it was more conservative (probably a good job now), so it was just awful all round.
At that point I hadn't got it into my head that I wanted to grow my hair out again, but basically I haven't been back to a hairdresser since. I spent 7 months in France completely ignoring my hair, except for using henna, but recently I have noticed it is simply a mass of split ends all over and have been trying to S&D them off. Mainly because it is also tangling together like crazy and impossible to comb or even detangle with my fingers without hearing multiple hairs snapping. (Ouch).
One side of my hair ended up way longer than the other, so I did actually trim it a few weeks ago, with quite a bit off, to try and even it up, but I didn't do a very good job of it and now my hair is still decidedly wonky (just not all on one side) and very many different lengths! I still don't want to cut it off though... I have never had especially long hair I think because hairdressers always cut off more than it would grow.
I think I am just going to keep trying to keep snipping off any split ends I see and trim it in a few months again if it still looks terrible. As far as I can tell I don't do anything especially damaging to my hair, so maybe it is just very fragile and prone to splitting. Anyway I voted for 'whenever needed' because I don't know what you would call that, except a mess. Maybe I can S&D and trim it 2x a year or something instead. ^-^ I am also considering trying some catnip and seeing if that helps.
