Thread: Does a U-Shaped hemline mean a thinner hemline?

Does a U-Shaped hemline mean a thinner hemline because of the shorter hairs on the sides? Does this mean that a blunt cut is the thickest and a V the thinnest?

The hemline itself won't necessarily be thinner - thin hemlines are due to layers or fairytale ends - and it can be blunt and thick in a straight, U, or V shape.

What will become thinner would be the taper of your hair, especially in a braid or ponytail. Some people prefer a taper because they make tucking the ends into updos and buns easier. Some people prefer no taper and a blunt braid tassel to show off the thickness of their hair. But yes, a straight cut will generally taper your hair the least, while a V cut will taper it the most, with U being in the middle. Having thinner ends than the hair near your scale will always result in a taper to some degree regardless of how you shape your hemline

Yes, the taper will be thinner on a V or U hemline, as opposed to a blunt (or straight) hemline which will result in a more even thickness across the bottom.

Thanks everyone! So if one wanted a thicker hemline, they would go for a straight rather than U or V shaped, I guess.

Yeah it can help for sure, but I have found that straight hemlines can be a bit of a pain to maintain, especially as my hair gets longer.

Agreed! If thick, blunt ends are one of your main goals, a straight hemline would be worth it. I've had all three, and I find that my favorite for both aesthetics and convenience would be a super soft U shape. It's essentially straight on the bottom, but with rounded corners.

I think that hair texture also plays into how hemlines look and function. I have wavy hair, so it will never look totally blunt unless I use heat to straighten it (which I just don't do).

Yeah, a soft U is my favorite shaped hemline...very soft and pretty. I completely agree that hair texture has a large role in how hemlines look. It is probably wisest to look at how one wears their hair on a daily basis and decide from there

This is what I have, too, and it's also my personal preference! It looks thick but not "mechanical". Example here. It doesn't remove any meaningful thickness, since it's just rounded at the corners, not layered.

I like U shaped haircut as well.
It's a great choice for hair that is on thinner side and wavy, like mine, even without layers there's volume and nice texture with this shape.
