I have these two opposing impulses when it comes to my hair -- one is excited to be completely hardcore and never cut my hair again, growing to terminal wherever that may be. Another part of me is obsessed with cool edgy haircuts with lots of layers (like shags and mullets). Hopefully, I have enough time in life to indulge both impulses...But which one first?

That's a really difficult question! I tried thinking of random people I know, and it is pretty much random! In my case I did years of extreme hairdos, then settled down into a life of long hair. It just suited my personality, I guess I just got more mellow. One problem I have found, though, is that your hair grows at its most lush and thick when you are young. By the time you get to fifty it is thinner and possibly just doesn't grow as long as it did when you were twenty, but I had fun. Hair fun. The best kind!

I can't believe I never tried diluting shampoo before now, it really is a lifesaver... I mean, I had tried it by globbing water and shampoo together in my palms, which didn't do much. This time I diluted it much more and in a beaker, then poured it over my hair, and the difference...! It got to all areas of my scalp much more easily, it lathered properly, it was quicker, it washed out quicker, I didn't need to shampoo twice and it still got really clean. I usually find washing my hair to be a hassle but this made it much easier.

Best of all, FAR less shedding! I'd been shedding a lot the past few months, and part of it was just due to it being hectic and busy, but I think it was also partly the difficulty in getting to my scalp properly now that my hair's longer and heavier so it required more moving hair around/straining it too much. I'm relieved to have found something that cuts down on that a significant amount. Hopefully I'll start getting some of that lost thickness back

Yes yes, that works so well. All the things you noticed are things I noticed too when I began to dilute my shampoo. And I was very pleased with the results.

Yes! I can't really imagine going back now. It's so much harder any time I don't dilute the shampoo. I also despite my hair over my shoulders when I'm shampooing my scalp, in such a way that the majority of the weight isn't in the scalp anymore, which makes it easier as well

Omg you're right. Honestly, you just convinced me which impulse to follow first. I'm going to grow out super long now, while I have all my lush hair, and enjoy that for however long I want. And then, when I'm older, when I'm sick of it or bored, and it's thinning down a bit, I can get all my layers and go nuts. Thank you!

    You're welcome, Abacus!
I actually pulled out some ancient photos of me to look at my hair, because I hadn't looked at it with the eyes of a LongHair-ist before. It was very interesting: I used to treat it like it was disposable! I mean it grew fast enough and there was a seemingly endless supply of it, that I would do all kinds of things. Shave bits, grow it longer, chop it shorter, blonde, black, wash it with soap or bubble-bath, use hairspray, tease it. Terrible things!
In photos from my mid-twenties I noticed it had way more volume than it has now; in fact I'd go so far as to say that in my fifties it is about a third of the thickness, if that.
