I have a question for the computer-savvy people here. I have a digital camera, and when I want to transfer photos to my laptop I use a card reader where I insert the card from the camera into the reader, then plug the reader into the slot on the side of the laptop, the laptop plays a couple of notes then displays the contents of the card so I can choose what to upload to my photo files.

However, in the last week, when I do this, the laptop plays its usual couple of notes, but then doesn't open the window showing my photos on my card. It just doesn't seem to know the card is there, or something, I don't know what is happening with it. I tried buying a new card and a new card reader to see if that would make a difference, and it hasn't. Could it be a problem with the part of the laptop which is supposed to read the card? And, if so, can it be repaired? The laptop is about a year and a half old.

Your card and/or reader might be "damaged" so Windows doesn't "autoplay" what's on the drive when it detects it. If you see the drive, see if you can access its contents (photos). If you can't find the drive in File Explorer then the reader itself might just be dirty (inside).

So key is to see if you can access the "drive" in File Explorer as Bri-Chan suggested.

But I bought a new card and card reader and the laptop is not detecting those either? Also, which "drive" would I search for?

Edited: Nevermind, I found the drive and the photos on it, but why then does it not bring up the usual window as normal? Does something need cleaning?

It could also be a setting change. None of my external devices automatically open a window when connected.

Go to settings and search for autoplay.

Ah, right. So how would I go about doing that, exactly, and how would I know which driver it is?

Uninstall the device, reboot your computer, and let Windows find your "new hardware", and reinstall its driver or prompt you for the driver to install.

Is your reader integral to your computer or something you plug in?

I plug the SD card reader into the USB port on the side of the laptop. I'm not sure what you mean by "uninstall the device." When you say to reboot the computer, do you mean turn it off and then restart it?
