Just got my head coverings from Head Coverings by Devorah today! (Thank you, Kat, for reminding me about that shop!)
I am really pleased with them. I bought three snoods and two head bands. Basically, my plan was to buy three coverings that can go with all of my clothes, because I am not about to spend all of our savings on this. I paid almost 200 dollars, when you add up the cost for the items with shipping and import taxes. These are hopefully going to last me for years, though. Two of them were ones that you chose a size for (based on hair lenght, not head). I had to go for the largest size, so those snoods actually go down to my shoulder blades. I haven't made up my mind on if I prefer that or those that just end at the neck, because I can actually tuck all of my hair in on of those too. The plus side, though, is that the long ones give my hair more space, meaning the weight of my hair won't start pulling the snood off of my head.
The two head bands I bought were designed to make the snood sit more securely, which they do. I think the were crucial, as I chose snoods with lace and they will be really slippy if nothing more grippy is underneat....
Other than that my only complaint is static. But I suppose that is to be expected and I frankly don't care much, since the hair will be covered anyways.
I am pleased and quite curious to start my head covering journey!

Cool! Post pictures if you feel like it. I've seen a few of her coverings that I like.
I'm still wanting to order from the seller on Etsy RuttShop / RuttUSA. I like that they're sheer and unobtrusive (so I don't call too much attention to myself and have to answer questions), but still with pretty embroidery to make them dressy. I'm just not certain if a headcovering that sheer "counts"? But I would want to ask for custom orders-- most of their coverings are more narrow than I'd like (front to back), so I'd like to have something a bit bigger, and be able to choose my embroidery style.
Putting it in my signature because I have to say it so often:
Do what works for your hair, not what other people say is "right" or "wrong." If it works for you, it's not wrong. If it doesn't work for you, it's not right.
I almost ordered from RuttShop a while back. For some reason, I didn't. It takes me a while to decide to buy something, especially when I know it will cost extra due to import taxes. I also thought about not wanting to stand out too much when choosing mine. I'm already visible enough just for choosing to cover at all.
I guess it's difficult to find out where the limit goes exactly, as for what "counts" as a covering (if you are thinking about covering for church or modesty?). We want those lines, but I suppose there is a reason God never gave the exact centimeter rule for how long our skirts/pants should be and such....
I looked a bit at the shop you mentioned and would probably personally find that the most sheer ones showed too much of my hair to feel like a covering at all. But I am also covering for modesty, so... maybe that makes a difference in how I judge it? They are really pretty, though. I like the lace styles. Two of the ones I ordered are lace covered, but not sheer, because they are double layered. So I was happy about that. Maybe it's possible to get a custom order like that done at RuttShop too...

I don't consider a headband of 5 centimeters or two inches a covering really.. Something like 10 cm or 4 inches minimum.. though in a pinch I would wear just a headband and not worry about it! A bun and a scarf or a wide band sort of covering works for me. I agree that the see-through lace or tulle ones are not very covering, but I also feel like they are a bit fancy for my taste for regular Sundays perhaps.. I would wear one to someone's wedding though. I ordered my first full cover thingy, it is made of linen and was the first I have ever seen that I liked and could see myself wearing. I don't have it yet so I haven't been able to try it out. If it looks really silly, I can always wear it to do gardening or baking or something
You are right that it is a personal line to draw. I don't have very strict lines. I feel like it is partly a symbol of submission, and partly for modesty. So, with our culture so skewed and far gone, it is hard to determine what is modest! Yes, flaunting waist+ length thick wavy hair cascading down one's back is not modest. But a nice bun showing, what about that? You could argue that it can get imaginations running wild, about what would happen if I took off that clip.. but then again, I think that men have a responsibility to control themselves too. Or we would have to wear head-to-toe covering. So I have decided that more than a headband, but a bun can show.
Also, if I forgot to put on a head covering, I would rather go without than go back and be late to the service, or wear a woolly winter hat or a swimming hat I found in the car or something funny like that!! It has to be proper for the occasion too .
A woman in another reformed church wears a long scarf on her shoulders that she lifts over her head when there is praying. I interpret the covering to be for the whole service but I am in no way dogmatic about it. And I do know that women covered outside of congregation as well in Biblical times, but since the Bible doesn't command us to do that, I think it is enough to do it for congregating with the Body of Christ, and the rest is more of a cultural issue. In the summer I still cover sometimes in daily activities because it protects my scalp and hair, but it is not consistent.
My usual outfit for church is a midi length denim skirt or a corduroy skirt with a nice blouse or a cardigan or something like that, or a midi to maxi length dress. There was a meme in Instagram about baptist women and denim skirts, it made me LOL. I have a denim dress too that I love
ETA: Those pre-tied snoods look like something I might wear as stylistically!

For me, I'm not trying to hide my hair or anything, so it probably doesn't matter. I guess if I could define to myself exactly why I do it, it would be an easier question to answer... Like, some people would cover all the hair. Others might count a headband. I've seen people say that it doesn't count if it's not obvious that it's a religious covering (so, if it looks like any sort of hat or headband or scarf that just anyone would wear, it doesn't count-- people have to be able to look at you and say "ah, that's for religious reasons").
(But yeah, I've been wanting to order from them for a while, but having analysis paralysis... I'm afraid I'll ask for a custom order and not like it {like, what I'm imagining doesn't come out in reality the way I thought it would*} or that I'll not do a good job describing what I want and the conversation will be awkward...)
*I would tie it behind my head kerchief-style, rather than leaving it hanging mantilla-style like is seen in many of their pictures.
Yes, I don't consider a headband to be a headcovering, either. I guess I'd have to have at least a bit of the back of my head covered/ most of the top of my head, or something. I like the dressiness of their scarves, though, because that's what I'm looking for for church-- I don't dress casually for church, and a lot of scarves and headcoverings I have are more casual. (Also, I'm usually in an off-white choir robe, so I've been wanting an off-white headcovering to match. {The other color I would get is brown, to match my hair and be extra-unobtrusive... the non-embroidered ones would be good for the more casual situations like choir rehearsal or whatever, where I'm not dressed up.} These are nice, or I was thinking something in lace or chiffon.)
Putting it in my signature because I have to say it so often:

Different religion, in my case, but for us (Qaraim/Karaites) people cover their heads while praying, too. So some people just lift their scarves over their heads or put on a hat specifically when there's prayer. I was raised that way, and it's what my mother still does. (My dad covers his head whenever he's away from the farm, but at home will put it on and off for prayers.) When I first started going to school away from home, I would keep a scarf or hat in my backpack and put it on and off and on and off whenever I had to say a blessing. It got so annoying that I graduated to being a full-time headscarf-wearer out of sheer aggravation at having to untie and retie it all the time, not to mention making space for an extra thing in my bag ( ; At this point, I doubt that many of my friends would recognize me without a headscarf!
Kat, I know all about analysis paralysis (phew, difficult words for a Norwegian... I had to look at your spelling twice!). I think part of the reason it took me so long to start covering was that I never got around to buying, because I wanted to make the best choice and kept looking, filling my online shopping cart, regretting, waiting... and doing everything again. Sigh. Eventually I just ordered, after deciding I'm not going to care about the import taxes limit as far as value goes.
Did you eventually get around to getting a custom order? Would be interesting to hear about your experience if you get it done.
My head coverings are staying put so far and a side effect that I like is not having to wonder how to do my hair. I just choose the head covering color of the day and done. Hopefully people will get quickly used to the sight of me with it on! And perhaps get to where you are now, Shelomit, that they will not recognize me without :-P

Here is what I'm wearing today. One of my favorite tops, calf-length denim skirt, gold velvet Garlands of Grace wide headband (it could still be made wider than it is in the picture) and a Nautilus bun with a Large Ficcare.
I got the one and only full cover snood, and it juuuust fits my bun in it, so it's definitely very big. It looks cute. It came with an attached little comb thingy which keeps it from sliding. I think it will be wonderful if I want to protect my hair from the sun, at least. I'm not sure about wearing it otherwise.. since I'm the only one who covers at all in my little congregation and one of a very few that do it within our wider reformed circle. But we'll see...
