Sock buns aren't very damaging, provided that the elastics and Bobby pins you use are gentle and well placed (not too tight, smooth and without sharp edges).
If the material of the "donut" Is very coarse you may try with a real clean sock: cut the toe tip open and roll it. Long/thick woolen socks make a nice volume, while short/thin cotton make smaller, less obstrusive ones.

OK guys, I think I should finnaly call it APL! In the beginning of the month, I took the monthly length photo and it looked like I still wasn't there (after saying for 4 months that "only 1 more cm and I'll be there"), yesterday I took this picture and I think I am a solid APL.
What do you guys think? Would you call it APL? Or would you wait another month?

Don't regret the chop, but now I want to see how long it can get

Hello again fellows! So, I was maybe a month or two away from APL (after two years of growing....) aaand... yesterday I chopped off over two inches *sad panicked face*. That's over half a year's growth for me (I get 3-4 inches a year). I don't know what happened :'( I really liked the length in my back (which was longer than the front so past APL). I don't have money for the hairdresser as I don't have a job right now and no legal right to work until next month. I was getting tired of the most damaged, crunchy ends, I intended to cut off 3/4 of an inch max but being not a pro I had to go shorter and shorter to make it all even....
On the plus side, my hair is healthier! On the minus side, the cut looks not great and of course, it's all so much shorter. I regret it maybe 40%. But in siw months I won't think about it anymore. It'll come back some and then I'll hopefully have money enough to get the cut evened out.
I'll check in again at the end of the year to see if I'm any closer to that elusive APL!! I've never had my hair at APL before, it will be a true milestone.

Another thing: any tips to regain some hair thickness (ie quantity of hair)? I've lost a ton of hair over the last two years (hair falling from the root, with cuticle; about 100 strands a day; my hair is very fine and thin to begin with so this is just pushing it) and now that the fallout has started to calm down (less stress I guess) I would like to stimulate those follicles to make some new hair

Hello! I haven't posted barely anything at all, but I thought I'd start with this thread. I'm currently just hitting shoulder length after growing my hair out of a pixie cut for the past 2 years. I'm having to restrain myself from cutting it back into a bob again because I'm determined to grow my hair out long again. I've got very fine (but thick) hair that does get damaged easily, especially the ends. Back when I had waist length hair as a teen, the ends got really scraggly, so growing it out long again is going to be challenging to keep it healthy.

Are hair ties technically damaging to the hair? Are there any other options for putting it up that don't involve hair ties, or do I not need to worry about that so much? My issue is that my hair is just short enough to fall out of a bun if I try putting it up, and it doesn't help that my individual strands are very slippery and fine.

Claw clips could work at your length.

I would certainly recommend some good hair growth tonic or similar solution. I don't know what you have available in the place you live but I would look after something with biotin, vitamins and sure anything with rosemary should work. I was pretty happy with Weleda Hair Tonic with rosemary. Right now I'm on my personal favourite, Jantar ( with Amber extract) true and tested polish product
Drinking nettle tea is good for hair growth. I'm actually sipping on my daily cup as I write this answer
