Today I went to the hairdresser's for the first time in probably over ten years, and....oooooh booooyyy....it might be another ten before I do that again.
The good news to start with is that the lady did a great job with actually cutting the hair. She trimmed slowly, a little at a time, letting me check between cuts to make sure I was happy with the length, and it honestly looks a good deal better now. Plus she used all organic and natural products on my hair, like I like (I did specifically go to her because it's a natural salon), and she didn't even charge me for the hair mask that she did. So that's super.
But this is where we get into the bad stuff... She had NO idea how to deal with long fine hair. I knew there would be problems from the very beginning, when she started by dragging a fine-toothed comb through from the very top, rather than starting at the bottom. When the comb wouldn't go through (surprise surprise, esp with my hair... -_-), she switched to a brush and tore through top-to-bottom until any tangles were ripped out. I just keep looking on in horror as my hair collected on her brush. It was traumatizing.
Then she cut the hair. That went well.
Then she washed it and set a mask. That went less well. First, she did not condition the lengths before shampooing. I don't think she's ever heard of that. But that's fine, I understand that's something a lot of people wouldn't know, even at a salon. But second, she was so rough shampooing! I felt like she was a medieval washerwoman and my hair was a dirty rag to be scraped and pulled until it was clean. That was definitely a little harrowing too. Finally, she put in the mask, put a shower cap over it, told me to sit, and then went off to take care of another client. I expected her to be back in 10 minutes (at which point I'd be annoyed at the mask being too short), or in 20 minutes (at which point I'd be content that she'd at least done that part well). She kept me there for almost an hour instead.
Now, I understand that a long mask is probably best for the hair, so I don't really have an issue with that, generally. What I do have an issue with is the way she treated me the entire time, like I was an irritating chore and an afterthought. She had been so fast and distant with everything else that I felt as though she was rushing to get me out the door. I never expected her to then sit me down and have me stay for almost another full hour! And during all that time, she was talking with the other client, coming over to me as soon as they were finished, which again makes me think that she really had just basically forgotten about me until it became convenient for her.
After that, she rinsed out the mask (I told her my hair takes a LOT of rinsing to get the product properly out, but the nape of my neck is still damp with product that didn't get rinsed fully...so...that's nice...) and took me back to brush out my hair. This is where the real nightmare started. She took that same brush from earlier, and with the same savagery, attacked my wet, tangled hair. She tore, scrapped, and ripped in a way I'd never thought a hairdresser would do. Especially not one who understands that I'm trying to grow it out. My hair is super baby fine, tangles very easily, is already full of split ends and damage, and she just hacked away at it! I dread to think of all the splits I'll be finding over the next few weeks. Plus, at the end, she didn't even dry my hair. I asked for no heat, which I understand makes it harder, but instead of going to blow-dry on cool, she sat me under a hood thing for five minutes and went off to do something again. At this point, I was so frustrated, and also well and truly late for my actually busy day that I told her it's fine, got my things, paid, and left...with soaking wet, still soapy, torn, traumatized hair.
I'm never, ever going back to her ever again.
But at least the cut was good, I guess...
