    Today I went to the hairdresser's for the first time in probably over ten years, and....oooooh booooyyy....it might be another ten before I do that again.

    The good news to start with is that the lady did a great job with actually cutting the hair. She trimmed slowly, a little at a time, letting me check between cuts to make sure I was happy with the length, and it honestly looks a good deal better now. Plus she used all organic and natural products on my hair, like I like (I did specifically go to her because it's a natural salon), and she didn't even charge me for the hair mask that she did. So that's super.

    But this is where we get into the bad stuff... She had NO idea how to deal with long fine hair. I knew there would be problems from the very beginning, when she started by dragging a fine-toothed comb through from the very top, rather than starting at the bottom. When the comb wouldn't go through (surprise surprise, esp with my hair... -_-), she switched to a brush and tore through top-to-bottom until any tangles were ripped out. I just keep looking on in horror as my hair collected on her brush. It was traumatizing.

    Then she cut the hair. That went well.

    Then she washed it and set a mask. That went less well. First, she did not condition the lengths before shampooing. I don't think she's ever heard of that. But that's fine, I understand that's something a lot of people wouldn't know, even at a salon. But second, she was so rough shampooing! I felt like she was a medieval washerwoman and my hair was a dirty rag to be scraped and pulled until it was clean. That was definitely a little harrowing too. Finally, she put in the mask, put a shower cap over it, told me to sit, and then went off to take care of another client. I expected her to be back in 10 minutes (at which point I'd be annoyed at the mask being too short), or in 20 minutes (at which point I'd be content that she'd at least done that part well). She kept me there for almost an hour instead.

    Now, I understand that a long mask is probably best for the hair, so I don't really have an issue with that, generally. What I do have an issue with is the way she treated me the entire time, like I was an irritating chore and an afterthought. She had been so fast and distant with everything else that I felt as though she was rushing to get me out the door. I never expected her to then sit me down and have me stay for almost another full hour! And during all that time, she was talking with the other client, coming over to me as soon as they were finished, which again makes me think that she really had just basically forgotten about me until it became convenient for her.

    After that, she rinsed out the mask (I told her my hair takes a LOT of rinsing to get the product properly out, but the nape of my neck is still damp with product that didn't get rinsed fully...so...that's nice...) and took me back to brush out my hair. This is where the real nightmare started. She took that same brush from earlier, and with the same savagery, attacked my wet, tangled hair. She tore, scrapped, and ripped in a way I'd never thought a hairdresser would do. Especially not one who understands that I'm trying to grow it out. My hair is super baby fine, tangles very easily, is already full of split ends and damage, and she just hacked away at it! I dread to think of all the splits I'll be finding over the next few weeks. Plus, at the end, she didn't even dry my hair. I asked for no heat, which I understand makes it harder, but instead of going to blow-dry on cool, she sat me under a hood thing for five minutes and went off to do something again. At this point, I was so frustrated, and also well and truly late for my actually busy day that I told her it's fine, got my things, paid, and left...with soaking wet, still soapy, torn, traumatized hair.

    I'm never, ever going back to her ever again.

    But at least the cut was good, I guess...
    Oh my God!!!!! What the hell? I'm so sorry for that experience! That sounds like my worst nightmare! Try and find someone more professional who understands how hard it is to grow it and who will respect what you are trying to do! I would sue her if I were you!

    That's horrible. I am so sorry you had a bad experience. Hope your hair recovers.

    Hi Larke, It always amazes me how so many hairdressers, who are supposedly trained at dealing with hair, that's all they have to do, just break it and manhandle it and really don't seem to care that much at all about it's health. What happened that you didn't tell her to stop after the first stroke of that comb at the top of your head? My waist length hair got very damaged when the hairdresser forgot about me after putting highlights in my hair. I had to cut my hair to shoulder length - of course, I will never dye my hair again anyway.

    I haven't posted in a long time because there hasn't been much to tell. My hair stopped growing fr 3 months when I had to move and life was going crazy, but a month ago I started better care, oiling, brushing, upstyles every day. I'm not sure if my hair is getting longer, the last length shot I did showed no increase at all. but it is so strange, I cut off 2 inches off the ends last month, and it is the same length still. I honestly don't know how it works anymore!
    BSL -> MBL -> WL (almost) -> Hip->TBL!

    I just did my yearly trim...2 inches was trimmed off but it feels like a foot. I never imagined a measly 2 inches would make that much of a difference. At least I'm still sitting between bsl and waist...

    I was at waist and decided to cut off my really dry ends (my hair feels so so good now - my ends had some heat damage from when i used a curling iron a lot). So back to a little below bsl.

    Actually took another look at my hair today and I’m not quite at waist yet. So I’ll hang out here until I reach it.

    Okay, I'm definitely past waist now. I still have trouble believing it, though! For some reason, even though I can clearly tell where my waist is, I still feel like I need a little more length. It doesn't help that my hair is sometimes curly, so the shrinkage makes it look shorter, and sometimes it's straight. Anyway, I'm off to the waist to hip thread!
