I'm interested in making my own hair sticks, most hair sticks are pretty thin compared to what I'm used to. What kind of wood can you use? I have some bits and pieces of plain old 2x4s. What does oiling do? What kind of oil can you use?

Now that the summer swap is complete, here are some of the recent self made hair toys I made for the swap. Sorry picture quality isn't great but should have snapped some decent photos before shipping them off.
It was a lot of fun and turns out I really enjoy making stuff for others and far more likely to finish the projects than when I try to make stuff for myself (read no dead line lol).
