I've had one for a couple years. NEVER got it to work, even with all kinds of advice. I'd sell it, but it's gotten a bit damaged from hitting the floor so many times My bun gets quite effectively pried apart as I insert the moon ('cause the moon gets fatter in the middle) then the moon flops and falls. I don't see how it could work as anything but an accent piece, for me anyway.

Chinese bun? With the moon going under an elastic would be a safe bet i suppose.

Wow! It's kind of really good to know, actually!

I see so many moons in LHC-ers' thudworthy avatars, and I've definitely been drooling over some, but had no idea that they may be used just as accents or don't necessarily hold for too long on their own.

Maybe moons work better in curly, textured, grippy hair? Or if the moon is made of flatter, more rectangular-shaped piece of material, rather than totally round and smooth?

I have one stick that is this shape ~ and flat and it stays put just fine without twisting around. So I doubt it is the flat shape. I have never had a moon though, so.. no clue

I followed TorrinPaige's tutorial, and that's how I get mine to work. My first moon was one of ShirlAnn's early very thin designs and it tends to flip outward, but my bigger two (seen in my avatar) stay put fairly well, but I do have to fiddle with them a bit upon insertion. If you are having trouble, maybe use a few u pins around the base coil after you have the moon in?

You could still sell it on the swap board. I would just let folks know about the damage and discount it appropriately. We've got plenty of folks with experience sanding damaged hairtoys, they may be able to salvage it?

I've had similar troubles with my moon. It's a big one, 5", but I'm hoping to grow into it. Just the other day after reading this thread I was able to successfully insert without floppage....but I took it out to do it again and lo, it would not work! I plan to try again, but for me I know my hair is between apl and bsl so I just might not have enough hair yet...

I don't have a moon but I have this piece which is similar (at least its like half a moon)

I made it work by following TorrinPaige's moon tutorial.
It took some fiddling and practice but now it works every time. I use it on a cinnabun. the trick is to pierce only a little bit of the coil with the point of the claw (moon) as Torrin shows at 3:38. I would even pause the video so you can exactly what she does at that point. Then watch VERY carefully at 3:42 as she shows how she then inserts the moon in the unbunned hair at the side of the bun, not the bun itself, twists the moon around and lets it go back into the bun and come out, at about 3:51, 3:52. The bun will hold if you do it exactly like that. You do need to do something of a loose bun so that the the thick part of the moon can go into the bun coming back up (but not so loose that it will fall apart). I think the thickness of the bun/claw is actually what hold the bun up from just that one side. It does with mine, anyway.
I didn't get it until I paused the tape and saw exactly how she was inserting the claw and how little hair she takes up at first--I think that is key and ALSO the way that she then flips the claw over.
Hope this helps and some more of you can wear your moons. I don't buy one because it looks like horns to me or a crescent moon crown (like Isis), and I have issues with appearing to have horns personally and with the Isis crescent moon crown because of my religion but if you don't have those same issues, I can see that it would be a great hairtoy. I know my claw, which is essentially a moon cut in half, holds like a rock and I believe the moon would too. I would think only that if you have a tremendously large bun made of very slippery hair (which of course some of you do), would you need to place a spin pin on the other side, opposite where the moon is placed. Torrin has a tremendously large bun, but does not have slippery hair.

That might be Hathor, not Isis. I am not completely up on goddess lore, since I do not believe in it at all.
also, my hair is BSL stretched, so I don't think you need super long hair or a big bun to use a smallish moon.

I've never had a problem with either of my moons needing support to stay in, so I may not be much help on the matter. I also followed TorrinPaige's tutorials when I first got a moon. The first one is a Ravenscroft and the second is a WAJ.
