Well I'm a 1c/2a here but, layers are a lot harder to work with for updos/braids. I cut them all out and my hair has been doing fine with body/volume/waves.

I'm growing out my layers too, just for more convenience with braids and buns. Like, look at my hair forked bun today. It's exploding out of the back of my head. And my layers slip out of my braids. :/
Have you ever considered using scrunchies instead of hair elastics? They're much gentler on the hair, so you might not have such a problem with your braids.

So, I'm at that frustrating point where I THINK I'm waist, but then I feel an inch short, but then it must be waist by now, but what if I'm just tilting my head, but, but, but... etc. It doesn't help that I got a trim recently for my ends and that was about 0.5 - 1.0 inch off everywhere. I'm also slightly PO'd that my hairdresser cut my hair unevenly. I've got a side part in the front and she didn't take that into consideration. Instead, she cut as if I had a straight part, so now I have this random shorter piece on the left in the back that I'm going to have to grow out. Once I hit no-doubt-about-it-waist, I'm going to probably microtrim (myself, hmph!) until all of my U-hemline outliers get there.

Until then, I guess I'll be chilling here instead of the waist to hip/tailbone/BCL/whatever threads.

Oh oh! I know about the side part thing. I always ask my hair to be cut with the part in. My barber did a fantastic job of this...well last April (2013) when I had my last trim.

My poor hair is not going to like me soon. I've signed up for a swimming membership at my local pool so 3 mornings a week my poor hair will be put up and under a swim hat (which always has a habit of trying to come off???)

Now it's acting like it wants to be straight. IMHO, straight hair looks okay with or without layers; hence my little thought process...)

Also, I need to bun more. My ends are a little frayed from hair elastics, I think. I love the look of braids, and use accent braids to keep the layers contained, but the elastics seem to either slide off, or kink the end hairs. (Again, with the layers, some shorter hairs end up right in the elastic, so that isn't helping the cause!)

I also think my underlayer is going to get some manic panic or indigo for fall.

Any fellow straighties have experience with layers? Please advise!
My experience with layers I hated them. They stuck out like broom straw and it took forever for them to grow out. I had to bite the bullet and cut them out. Never ever again.

It seems silly to me. It grows however it wants whether I measure or not.
I normally don't measure but I thought why not. I'm happy 5 inches until waist.

Another one here who doesn't measure. I take pics of the back side at times, so I can see that it grows, don't need to know a number

I'm very inconsistent with my measuring "schedule." I measured in January and March and then just didn't measure until today. I measured 30 inches, which is what most of you would consider waist. Still not feeling it though. Also, in March I measured 29.7 inches, but I did have a trim recently so I'm not even sure how much I gained in that time frame. Blah. I feel like my hair just doesn't want to grow.
