I was doing a SMT with every wash (~5 days) for a month or so, because my hair needs all the moisture it can get, but then it got colder and the humidity dipped low enough that the humectants wouldn't be doing me any favors. Now, if the forecast calls for three or four days of rain around wash day then I'll do an SMT, otherwise I just condition twice.

Um, so I know this is probably going to sound really weird even for a longhair board, but my conditioning treatments are based around the weather forecast. We get a lot of cold, dry days... and we also get a few relatively warm, wet, humid days. I'll SMT (my version is just adding glycerin to a moisturizing conditioner) if it's going to be warm and rainy. If we're looking at upcoming dry, cold weather, I'll use a shea-butter based shampoo and conditioner and avoid adding any humectants.

I do SMTs pretty much every time I wash my hair--I use it as a regular conditioner. The steam from the shower really helps the SMT moisturize my hair. I wouldn't recommend it just hanging around the house, what with the dry air and the fact that humectants can suck moisture out of your hair in really dry weather. After I get out of the shower, I make sure to use some sort of sealant, like an oil.
