Default Do you have a helix fork?

I am interested in getting a helix but am not sure what size I should be looking for. How big did you go? Do you wish you went bigger/smaller? Particularly I am looking at a 6.5 inch helix on etsy and I am worried it will be way too big for me right now but I also want to be able to wear it as I grow longer. I would really appreciate any experiences you have to share, or tips for picking a size based on length. I am brushing waist length right now and I have a couple 6.5 inch sticks that are a little long for me right now but not by a huge amount. I usually lean toward 6-5.5 for sticks and 5 inch for forks, should I be looking for something in a smaller size range? Thank you in advance so much

ETA Maybe I should have posted in the accessories section about this? I apologize if that's the case.

6.5" is about my size, but I can go with a 6". As long as the helix is minimum 5" it is all good for me. I would say that the 6.5" would be too large if the data from your profile is correct (BSL and ii). Unless it has a giant topper, but that doesn't sound comfy either. I would look for an helix with the same size in prongs as you usually do and a regular topper (1" or so)

The diameter thing is relevant too. The wider the diameter, the shorter the prongs you'll need

Probably the store accept custom orders

That makes sense. Kind of a bummer though because I really like this one in particular, https://www.etsy.com/listing/6701767...?ref=related-4
Maybe someone here can give it a good home and I will continue my search for one that catches my eye
Thanks for the tips, it was helpful!

Sorry, I giggled as the first thought that came to my mind was : the only forks I have are in the kitchen

This store is in my faves list on Etsy! I plan to buy a helix fork from them, just waiting on the perfect one to pop up.

My mom gave me a bocote helix fork from them for Christmas! The owner very responsive to questions and her work has definitely smoothed itself out over time, or at least compared to the other piece I have from her. My only qualm with the store is that I don't think she's figured out a steady price point yet; some things I think are too expensive and they don't sell and then others are pretty inexpensive but aren't to some people's preferences (but that's a whole other topic).

Anyways, I think helix forks are pretty versatile and secure. As Milady pointed out, the diameter is very important in addition to length. I have two helix forks, one being 6 inches total length and the other being 4.5 inches and honestly both securely hold my hair (...I'm not being very helpful, am I ) I guess to try to make things clearer, 6.5 inches may be a bit too long. I think that if I were in your shoes, I would get a 5 or 5.5 inch helix fork with a medium-ish diameter and see if that works for you. Hope this helps!

I have helix forks both from this shop and Furnival's. I like the ones from Furnival much better because they have a smaller diameter and are antler (making them MUCH lighter). I have two from Church Street and Love that I can only wear if they are very carefully balanced. The finish needed smoothed on two of the Church Street and Love forks that I got. Unless the posting says so, her helix forks also tend to have a bigger diameter (about an inch and a half). I have really fine, thin hair that is a bit longer than waist and an inch or less in diameter is pretty much the best for me. The best forks I have are also about 4.5 inches total length. The fork in the pic below is about 7/8ths of an inch in diameter at its largest point and about 4 inches long. It's a bit short but still works. I tend to think of these forks as big spin pins. They hold great. You might want to get some Goody spin pins and try them out to see how they work.

Thank you lunasea, That helps me get a better idea of what I'm looking for. I actually haven't had good luck with spin pins, well I can use them to hold a do but when it comes to removing them things get a little sticky for me. The fork in your pic is adorable! I think 5-5.5 would be more appropriate for my hair and I see what you mean about diameter. My disc buns have some "projection" to them but still not enough for something so wide. Maybe I will see about something custom instead of just waiting for something perfect to pop up and trying to snag it before the next person
Thanks again for all the info everyone, I appreciate the time you took to help me out.

Have you checked out that Rowan wood fork that AmandaPanda has listed on the swap board? I don’t know what the diameter is but the length looks close to what you are wanting.
