Ok, scratch what I said before about the white bits being flower petals (a little cat humour, lol). I just looked at my catnip up close and the lighter coloured bits appear to be stalk or bits of the larger stems.
I now have no idea exactly what I have as most if it is green but I still think that it is a mix of flowers and leaves.
I went on their site for Canada. Here are their descriptions. It is called garden, not leaves, very helpful, not, I know.
http://www.hagen.com/canada/english/...T=5&SUBCAT=504
All I do know is that this is the best catnip that I have used so far, bar none, and it is about a year old. I keep it in a cupboard, away from heat, light and moisture and it beautifully colours and conditions my hair, perfectly.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Hagen’s reply about quality control (QC). I had emailed them February 2008, about what exactly makes their catnip “Superior” compared to bulk catnip, lol, so my catnip is not quite a year old (I lose track of time with these things). I kept this. I had also asked about the species. That is not in the answer. If buds are in there it is leaves and flowers.
Their catnip is not totally dissimilar in appearance to catnip I have bought in bulk that said leaves and flowers. It does look better though and performs much, much better than health food store, bulk catnip I have purchased in the past. The catnip scientist/farmer said that Hagen, in his opinion, is a quality brand. He did not have to say that. As a wholesaler, it is not a brand that he supplies.
I just set up an account on Hagen’s website and emailed them again because I forgot that I had this stashed away. I asked about the species again and whether Catit Garden is leaves and flowers.
“Our catnip is organically grown and is naturally harvested, not going through any unnatural processing. It is pure catnip, our catnip does not contain fillers - you can actually see some of the buds in the catnip, where the potency is located.
Regarding the QC standards, we ensure that quality standards we require are met by the product delivery and that packaging does not add or change the characteristics of the product in any way.
It is grown in Canada.
Bulk catnip may have fillers, and like any herb, if it is old, it loses potency. When purchasing bulk products of any kind, there is no guarantee that the products are properly rotated and that freshness is maintained by the bulk container.”
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Dunno if it makes any difference, but the catnip I've been using is labelled 'herbs and leaves'. That's the only kind I've been able to find locally.
It seems to be working for me. I haven't experienced any miracles, but I do believe my splits have slowed down a bit. I do use conditioner after it, though. I use the catnip, then I shampoo, then I condition.
I want to continue what I'm doing for a couple more weeks, just to see for sure. But one day when my hair needs an extra wash, I'll try using catnip alone and see what I end up with. :)

I have never seen catnip labelled herbs and leaves. If however, your method and that catnip works for you, great.
I shampoo, then catnip. That is what works for me, no conditioner.

The order that works for me is to first shampoo to get rid of any build up, then rinse out excess water, soak hair with catnip tea and bag for 30-60 minutes, then rinse, then once it dries use a tiny bit of coconut oil if the ends need it. I was under the impression that conditioner blocks the action of the catnip, so I always make sure my hair is shampooed right before I use the catnip treatment.

That is exactly what I do, minus the coconut oil and you are right. Conditioner does block catnip. Anythng that coats the hair enough, blocks catnip. You need to something like the little bit of oil you use, if you need it, that washes out easily, before the next catnip application.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
ktani, thanks for the help.
I looked at the Swedish shop you linked to, it was just for dogs.
I have looked en several others, but no "bulk" catnip, mostly toys filled with some catnip, or the catnip from the label I already got.
But I think a visit to the big pet store nearby could be better.
My hair feels really dry now, hence (even though) camellia oiling.
I think I will use my decyl glukose schampoo next time, and use catnip after.
When hair feels ok again, I'll try the egg thing.
Aritha seams to be rather common in India, but they should also have problems with build up, or?
Fenugreek and mung beans contains mucilage what I understand, so build up problems would be a problem? But maybe Shikakai (that I haven't tried) is a good clarifier.
Excuse the OT...

Sorry about that Swedish site, but like I said, there was a language problem, lol.
No, Indian hair care traditionally recommends pre oiling before the washing herbs, that contain a number of things that may coat the hair. That IMO, would keep the mucilage from directly adhereing to the hair itself. And the methi and other mucilage plants for conditioning are not used every single time the hair is washed.

Aha. Heavy pre-oiling has never been great for me. I have troubles getting it out even with SLS schampoo.
Sounds like herb washes could be too much work for me at the moment. Especially trying out right properties of everything for me :D
I will keep reading though, maybe try again later.
I'll keep catnipping when not COing. That seamed great (when hair was normal).

I just replied to you in the other thread. You may have 2 things going on. 1. Build-up 2. Aritha can be drying to hair without pre oiling, which is the traditional way that it is used.
