That's interesting about the solidified oil on top of your refrigerated catnip. Like ktani, I have not yet noticed this, but I also think my batch of catnip has very few buds in it. Does your batch have particularly large amounts of buds?
Also, just to clarify: Are you saying that you have used catnip on top of a regular conditioner application? Ie CO with conventional condish, then rinse, then use catnip? And if so, you still felt that catnip gave you benefits over and above the condish on its own?
I am really curious about this, because I would love to get catnip to work over condish. For now I will keep experimenting with it without conditioner to develop a good sense for how much benefit I can get from it alone, but I am thinking that if in the long run my hair thrives on it as a left-in final rinse (which so far looks promising, my hair is still nice today), then it would be nice to be able to sometimes use conditioner before catnip, too, when my hair needs the extra slip, or when I want the scent but don't have the time to first bag the catnip, then rinse it and then apply conditioner...
Will be good to hear some more tests about this, and I certainly plan to investigate catnip's power over (cone-free) conditioners myself in the future, too, but for reasons explained above, I want to take it slowly.

The Hagen catnip I use has lots of buds in it. At no time has it ever separated or had anything in it solidify. I use cold catnip, straight out of the fridge and not warmed to room temperature, to wash my face in the mornings.
I have never seen any catnip tea I have used in almost 4 years, separate or any part of it solidify, even at lower dilutions, and steeped longer hours (6-8 hours).
I always shake the tea before use but I have just poured it out too. I have not seen oil on top. All together, I have tried about 4 different brands of catnip.
I have just poured out old, (week old and older batch leftovers) straight from the fridge, before rinsing out, then washing out the bottle. I would have noticed anything that had solidified, by now. That has never happened for me.
My current Hagen catnip is about a year old.
The only thing I can think of, is that whatever you put the catnip tea in, had residue in it, and what you are seeing solidify, is not catnip.
I have only been able to get dried Catnip so far.
Do you prepare it differently or is it all basically the same:confused:
Okay to respond to both your and ktani's question on the oil in the tea, I did check the solids and they were definitely oils because I took some out and rubbed it on my hand to be sure. Now, it may have been a fluke but in the container that I found this, I had put Saran Wrap over the top, then sealed with the lid (open spout, thus the plastic wrap to prevent leaking). This was the first container I filled so perhaps the oils collected there (not sure). I will report, if this phenomenon occurs again next time I brew.
I have another container that I just checked, which I will use for today's rinse and I do not see any oil chunks but I did leave it out on the counter for awhile this morning to warm up so that may have something to do with it or the reason I stated prior.
The brand I bought is from Walmart, marked organic, and seems to have both buds and leaves. I do know it's quite potent as my cat was getting excited from smelling the package before it was opened.
Yes, I did use catnip after COing with a no-cone conditioner. Since I am trying to wean myself off of shampoos, I am doing COs now with VO5 conditioners, rinsing, then applying catnip, bagging and rinsing before I exit the shower. I decided to try this after reading that others had had issues w/Suave conditioners for CO (oddly itchy scalps like I did) so I switched to VO5 for this.Quote:

My hair is wavy and thick with thick strands so I usually have a tough time keeping it under control without major frizz. What is working for me now is the CO as a wash, then a catnip rinse. Once my hair is just damp and no longer soaking wet, I apply a leave-in that I made following Fox's recipe (1 t. coconut oil, 2 t. Shea butter, 2 t. conditioner). This routine has made my hair, dare I say it, like a Breck commercial. Egad!
I may be experiencing the benefits of catnip in conjunction w/the leave-in but for me, this is the HG combo!
