Re: Catnip for split ends?
On the advice of a catnip vendor, I have sent this email, with suggested wording to, http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.co...il-p-1641.html, re their catnip "extract" essential oil.
"Hi, can you please qualify your data that suggests a carcinogenic nature to your oil and provide a list of ingredients, and the reported mechanism that manifests the suggested ailments?
I have never seen the essential oil for catnip, Nepeta cataria, that you list as non-hazardous, have a caution like this, about lung cancer on ingestion.
"7. Toxicological Properties/Information:
Liquid may irritate eyes and skin.
Orally toxic; may cause lung cancer if swallowed.
Avoid if pregnant."
http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.co.../Catnipoil.htm
For example, http://www.libertynatural.com/msd/277.htm"
The example link above states this about their oil
"The identity of the individual components of this mixture is proprietary information and is regarded to be safe and edible in dilute solutions (less than 1% in water). In accordance with 29 CPR. 1200 we have to assume that the mixture presents no health hazard."
http://www.libertynatural.com/msd/277.htm
The same company lists similar cautions to the first link for their alcoholic extract of catnip, the alcohol being the carcinogen, not the catnip.
http://www.libertynatural.com/msd/667.htm
Catnip is not listed as a health hazard here.
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/prodn...ataire-eng.php
or here
http://www.drugs.com/npp/catnip.html
I have seen no other listings for the oil or plant like the above. The first link must be adding something to their oil.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Rach - why don't you use a scrunchi or covered elastic to tie the top of the sandwich bag closed over the hair while doing the catnip tea soak? That way you would not have to hold it. That is my method but I am quite lazy ...

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Well, I'm showing up here again, and I'm going to try this thing repeatedly for a while.
I definitely liked spraying it on dry hair as an application method. Then bagged and rinsed after a few hours (when i finished studying).
In any case, I'm doing this with CO, and hopefully that doesn't block the good effects too much. There's no way I'm going back to regular shampooing. Just doing it a few times while experimenting with some silicones got my scalp totally dry and tight.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I heard back from the company re their catnip essential oil.
"We do thank you for taking the time to show us this error. You’re absolutely right. That is there, and for a non-hazardous product to be a carcinogen is definitely odd. I’m terribly sorry to report that this is a human error. I went immediately to the lab dept and we’ve triple checked current and past data. We remorsefully realized that a template must have been used for this oil and the document wasn’t correctly overseen before posting the MSDS on the site. This is information has been removed. I’m terribly sorry to excite you this way. It is our error and we have made the adjustment.
I assure you 100% that None of our Catnip documents ever read that this is or has been a carcinogen, ever. Although some of our oils are indeed toxic, especially being taken internally; however, Catnip EO is not a carcinogen and is non toxic.
Lastly, I will mention that we recommend that all of our products are for external use only."
Their amended MSDS
"7. Toxicological Properties/Information:
Non-Toxic."

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Well, that sounds promising! Right? How did you guys find the essential oil to work in comparison to the soak?

Absolutely!
It is a credit to the company that they responded so quickly and were so honest. I just could not understand why there was no mention of toxicity like this elsewhere in current research and how the company could say that the oil was not hazardous in one section of the MSDS and a carcinogen in another, unless there was an additive not disclosed.

tried and seems near enough impossible without spilling the catnip tea everywhere unless i find a bag which it thin and rectangular  enough to fit a fat braid in.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Hmmm. my hair is dripping wet but not enough to spill. I pour the excess out so it does not drip down my back - brrrrr!! Quart size storage bags?

if googles right then i already use them. i do have allot of catnip tea in them to be sure all my layers are well covered as there were very damaged once upon a time and i've worked hard to get them to grow downwards (they didn't before because of splits everywhere).
after my catnip soak i poor the rest over my head and what's left in the tea pot.
the conditioning properties are hard to ignore........

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I use the thicker freezer bags for my catnip treatment. They come in different sizes and they work perfectly and are reusable.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I grow my own catnip. It's a weed so it is very easy to grow. I dry it and store it for later use.
I have made the catnip tea for a few times. I use a tablespoon of catnip and a cup of hot boiled water. I let it rest until it is lukewarm and strain it in a jar. I will braid my hair and dip the ends to the catnip tea. Then I put a plastic bag over the end of my braid, secure it with a clip and let it be for an hour or more. Then a quick rinse with water and a moist bun.
My ends feel much nicer!

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Update
I have used the 5 hour brewing time now enough times to be sure that it is right for me. The interesting thing is that my method, of leaving it on my hair for a 1 hour treatment is very important. I have cheated on occasion by reducing the time when I have been rushed and the time does make a difference for me.
A 5 hour brew time for me, 1 hour each time, leaves my hair like silk, no knotting, less breakage than ever and less static. I also get no "shrinkage" (my hair getting too curly or over moisturized). I prefer my waves to be loose (I stretch them out by moulding my hair, following the natural wave but elongating the s pattern with my hands, gently.

Hello dear ktani:D It's been a while. After a huge chop...15 inches:( and about 6 months of trying CO, I'm thinking about going back to catnip again. I had such amazing results with it when my hair was longer so I'm going to shampoo tonight and then give my short hair a nice catnip soak:crush:

I was just thinking about you! I had seen another of your posts and wondering if you were still using catnip, lol, and how you were doing.
15 inches is a huge chop but you no doubt had your reasons for doing it. I wish you well for your latest hair growth journey!
Catnip is still a constant these days with regard to my hair and it still works perfectly for me. I am still using my Sunsilk shampoo. That is all I have used or over 4 years and counting. My own hair is very long now.
I need to decide what length I want it but as it grows and I get used to the new length (almost waist, pulled down in back) I like it. I always wear my hair loose though, so it is a matter for me, of it not being a problem by getting in my way, lol.
I look forward to hearing about your return to catnip as a treatment/conditioner.

Awww:o Sweet that you were thinking of me. I am doing well I am happy to say. Yes it was a huge chop, does a meltdown count as a good reason?
I'm glad to here that you are still using catnip with success. I used catnip after a mild shampoo tonight. I am right now typing with wet hair, I'll see how nice it is in the morning. I have been COing with VO5 for about 6 months now and am used to the feel of my hair. So I'm hoping the difference will be pleasent. I have not used catnip on hair this short before ( almost APL) and I am really hoping that going back to frequent use of catnip will allow me to grow hair even more healthy and lovely than before. A girl can dream right?:cloud9:

Yes, a meltdown counts as a good reason. It sounds as if you still have a good length to start with for your new routine though. I find that although my hair growth has always been pretty good, with catnip, it is even better.
If you have been COing for 6 months, it may take a while to see the results you want with catnip, depending on how often you clarified and the conditioner used.
When I experimented with conditioner while using catnip a good while back now, it took a few shampoos for the conditioner to wash out and the catnip results to be what they were prior to using the conditioner.

Nepeta cataria is the correct species. Even though it is often referred to as catmint, they are 2 different species. Nepeta cataria is the one sold for pets. Some pet store catnip labels do not specify the species. I emailed Hagen and they verified that the catnip I am buying is Nepeta cataria. I have always stored mine in a cool cupboard and it has lasted well. My current batch is almost 2 years old and is just fine.
"Common Catnip (Nepeta cataria)
White flowers, grows up to 3 feet. This is the variety most cats enjoy.
Catmint (Nepeta mussinii)
Purple flowers. This plant has smallish, grey/green leaves. It grows up to 15 inches high.
... Catnip is usually fairly easy to grow...It likes light sandy soil, and grows best in full sun. When storing catnip, put it in an air tight container, in the fridge or freezer. To dry fresh catnip, hang upside down in a dry, ventilated area, away from the sun. ..."

Yeah, Nepeta Cataria is the right stuff although I thought it had white flowers rather than lavender/blue ones. I'd double check with the seller if I was you. I did have loads of it in my garden but the local cats, including my own, totally destroyed it even some that I had growing in pots.

My pleasure! When harvesting catnip, it is best to harvest the flowers before the buds open. The oils are preseved that way.

there seems to be confusion with your listing which i've only just noticed. sorry.

shows-
Common Catnip (Nepeta cataria) - white flowers, 3 feet tall
and separately
Catmint (Nepeta mussinii) - purple/blue flowers, 15 inches tall
and your description seems to blend both descriptions of both types.
which type am i been sent?
Nepeta cataria or Nepeta mussinii
see what happens......
I intend to put them on hanging baskets and a high flower trough. I don't fancy the entire neighbor hoods worth of cats . fingers crossed :D

The 2 names are commonly used interchangeably. However if they are selling Nepeta cataria, that is the species you need.

Ktani, do you accept the title of "Catnip Guru"?
I get how to brew the nip tea, I get that my hair can't have build up. But should I use something to clarify first - like ACV rinse or something? Or is just using my shampoo bar ok, no conditioner?

I accept the title that I am a catnip "guru" about my own hair, lol. I know what works for me and I understand through countless experiments of my own and reading the reports of others, what limitations catnip can have with regard to products.
Re your question, I would use a vinegar rinse to follow the shampoo bar to remove soap residue. If you have conditioner residue, you may need to clarify with your shampoo bar or a different product if the bar cannot remove the residue on its own. Vinegar cannot remove conventional product residues.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I'm currently cone-free, and I don't FEEL like I've got a lot of buildup. I'll give the catnip a try following a rinse (ok, I use lime juice instead of ACV, I can't stand the smell of ACV) and see what my hair thinks of it.
My cats best not chew on my hair after!

Lime juuice should be fine or white vinegar. No cats should be chewing on your hair, lol.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I'm glad to be using catnip again as my scalp is soothed wonderfully and my hair is shiny. I had forgotten though how rough and tangly my hair feels while wet, opposed to the slick slippery feel from conditioner...hmmm...I'm going to have to experiment again.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
alright, I'm going to try to give catnip more of a try! I used it last night and it wasn't so bad. I steeped it for 5 hours, strained it and applied it to my hair by soaking my hair in a bowl and then with as much liquid as I could get to stay in I put my hair in a bun with a scrunchie. I put a plastic baggie over the bun and put a second scrunchie over it to keep it in place. I let it soak for an hour while watching TV and then I was going to rinse it out and apply extra conditioner but I was feeling lazy so I just took my hair down, combed it with my seamless comb and let it air dry with the rinse in my hair. I took a picture of my hair this morning and it seems OK with the catnip tea left in it. I have a few questions about my method and rather than search through all 100 pages of this thread I'm going to ask them here :)
1. Is there any reason I shouldn't leave the catnip rinse in my hair to air dry?
2. Do we really know for sure that the catnip treatments will be ineffective without shampoos? I am asking because I only shampoo my hair about once per week but i shower daily due to exercising and sweating from it. I don't want to shampoo daily but I would like to try using the catnip daily.
3. When I do shampoo I sometimes use a shampoo bar. Will applying catnip tea after a shampoo bar be effective or do the shampoo bars leave too much buildup on the hair for this?
4. I refrigerated the leftover catnip tea last night and am reusing the catnip rinse tonight. How many times can I reuse this mixture? Or should I be brewing a new one every time? I seem to recall reading that refrigerating it was OK but I want to double check that.
I stored my tea in a plastic mixing bowl with plastic wrap over the top to collect the condensation instead of it escaping in the fridge. I am worried some of the good stuff might have still gotten out so I'm going to start using a stainless steel mixing bowl I have which has a air tight plastic lid. That should prevent any of the good stuff getting out. Which brings us to question 5 :)
5. Is storing the catnip tea rinse in stainless steel OK?
Thanks so much in advance for answers :)

None except there are those including me, who prefer the results of rinsing it out.

Depending on how careful you were in preparing it (I sterilize my already washed mug, saucer, pyrex cup, and strainer with boiled water before use) up to a week or longer, kept in the fridge between uses.

I store mine in a washed out shampoo bottle. How much did you make? It should be fine as you stored it though.
5. Is storing the catnip tea rinse in stainless steel OK?.
I do not recommend it. It is acidic. Acidic herbs react with metals except for stainless steel but it depends on the stainless steel. I would store it in glass or plastic.

Ktani,
Thanks so much for the answers. I did catnip again last night. I this time rinsed it out of my length in the sink and then applied conditioner to my length and rinsed that out in the sink too. Then I used 3 drops of Camellia Oil as a leave-in. This made my hair dry supper soft and it has good shine. Too soon to tell if it's doing anything for the split ends but I need to do a good S&D and keep trying the catnip!
I will have a look around for a small plastic mixing bowl with lid. I made two mugfuls of catnip tea and had it stored in a small mixing bowl. I want to keep storing it in some sort of a mixing bowl so that I can just soak my hair in that same bowl all the time and not dirty other dishes. I part my hair in the middle and soak the left side and cover the length with catnip then I repeat with the right side. Then I soak both ends again and leaving as much liquid as I can in my hair I bun it and cover the bun with a ziplock bag, another scrunhie over that, then I put a shower cap on. This method seems to generate less drips than when I just used shower cap alone. Drips was one of the things that made me not be able to stand doing the catnip treatments, especially during wintertime when I'm already chilled to the bone! However, this new method I think I can live with so long as I get around early enough every night to do it so that I don't go to bed with a damp head (can't stand that either). I do notice I"m losing a few long pieces of hair from doing the updo, but I don't think it's too much.

I Have one more question. I know you said catnip tea will keep up to a week in the fridge. Is it effective even if you've soaked your hair in it previously?
I made two mugfuls Saturday night and I soaked my hair in it Sat. and Sunday. How many more soaks do you think I could get out of it before I need to discard it and make new?
I'm sorry if I'm sounding confusing. I'm basically trying to find out how many times should I soak my hair in the same catnip tea mixture?
Thanks so much.
Also wanted to say I love the way my hair is looking. It has some added shine and is very easy to detangle.

You are most welcome!
If your hair is clean each time, it should not matter how many times. I have never tried what you are doing. You have to see how it goes. I can get away with washing my hair and doing a catnip treatment once a week. I leave mine on in the bath/shower.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Okay, I've been reading about this around the forums for a while and wanting to try it. I just bought one of those corrugated cardboard cat scratchers and it came with a baggie of catnip, so I figure this is a good opportunity to give it a try. I've got a mug of catnip brewing in the kitchen at the moment.
I do have one question... I haven't read through the whole thread (it's rather long!) so I hope this hasn't been asked too often. I have really golden blonde hair naturally, and I don't really want the color to change. I read that it won't stain over conditioner. I usually CWC, so if condition with my normal coney conditioner, then shampoo like normal, and use catnip for the second condition, would that reduce the chances of it affecting my color? I'm not too concerned about it, since I read that it washes out after a few washes, but if this works for helping control my splits-from-hell, I'd like to be able to use it regularly without fear of changing my color.
This is my first foray into herbal hair care... I'm kind of excited :)

I'm kind of excited :)
catnip should not change either of our hair colors. I had the same concern before too but was reassured that it won't change hairs color. It merely provides a stain to white/grey very light hair. For hair colors like ours, it should not affect it. I have only noticed more shine and softness the past couple nights I've been using catnip... so far so good!

good, good... thanks for the answer. I'm going to try to stick with it for a bit and see how it goes :)
