Catnip tea is acidic but it may not be acidic enough for you post shampoo bar. You would need to try it out.

That's about what my dilution was. My pyrex cup has 275 on it but even as I eyeball it there's always a little more in it. I don't lean down to get on level with it. Or even lift it LOL. I'm getting ready to take it down out of the towel to finish air drying now.
I look forward to an update.
You are most welcome, most kind and thank you.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
My hair is completely dry now and soft as can be. It's like I used conditioner!!!
The ends aren't as dry feeling as normal, even with conditioner. It's still got a ways to go, it's catching occasionally, but I can tell a definate difference. And the "crunch" factor when I run my hands through it is less too, it's more of a normal "Swish" now than CRUNCH CRUNCH.
I will definately be keeping this up. :D

I am so glad that you are so pleased with it. The dilution really can make a difference (along with timing and bagging).
Fantastic!

Sigh....me too. :D
You don't know how long I've searched for a truly natural alternative to conditioner that WORKS.....this is a Godsend for me.

I'm glad though. I'm also glad that it worked for you before I started to try it....usually that's how I find out about things. I feel much more comfortable trying something that worked for someone else already.

It seems to work for others too by the length of his thread, lol. That is good to know for me, lol.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I'm sorry, I'm a little pressed for time these days, and I've already been through this thread once before Christmas...could you please tell me how often is the best benefit for doing a catnip rinse? I used the catnip I bought pre-Christmas for the first time 2 days ago, and was amazed at the softness after during the rinse and after it dried - and this was right after a henna application!

I use it every time I wash my hair, as a replcement for conditioning. I also use it for colour. I cannot speak for others but my no split ends and very low breakage, is IMO, because I use catnip all of the time.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Update on my third treatment...
Not sure how long I left it on this time but it was definately longer than 1.5 hrs.
It's already starting to do it's thing!
When I shampooed with DW today my breakage and shedding were WAY down. When I rinsed the 'nip I got maybe just a few hairs! And my ends feel as soft as my length, even when wet now! So it's definately strengthening my hair HOORAY!!!!! And softening. So I'm most probably a catnip-er for life. :cheese:
As a side note, I always struggle with dry, itchy, flaky scalp. It's worse in the winter due to dry air. The last two days I had ZERO itching and very little flaking. ZERO. For me that's a miracle in and of itself.
It is drying at the moment, so I'll update again when it's completely dry.

As I have said, for me, it is catnip forever, lol.
I am thrilled for you that you are so pleased. Catnip is a specific for scalp irritation. That means that is is known for that.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Well, it's dry now...and completely soft all the way through even down to the tips! The back where I have my dry areas are a little less soft but not much. YAY!
I may do an extra catnip treatment this week because I'm off....I usually only wet my hair 3 times a week but I may do a fourth saturday. I'm having too good results!!!

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I recently visited my in laws and tried for the first time a catnip rinse on my niece. She still needed a little bit of detangler but not as much as usual.:D Yippee, catnip is great, even on kids. Even her mom was impressed, I may not be able to get my in laws to stop giving my little niece kool aid, but maybe they will continue using catnip on her and she'll have great hair.;)

That was so sweet of you. I cannot think of a reason why catnip should not work on any hair type, or age group.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
My first catnip treatment! It is like I used a really good conditioner, my comb glided through my wet hair - not a single tangle. Then I oiled my hair and let it air dry, soft and shiny and strong hair! I am going on vacation in a few weeks, will probably take the whole bag of catnip with me, wonder if they will confisticate it at the airport? Am waffeling on what hair toys to take for the same reason, I have mostly hairpins and sticks. Anyway, the catnip worked better than ever expected, this will become a three times a week treatment.
I made the tea as suggested, made a ponytail and dunked the tail into the tea, poured the rest over my head and put the tail into a baggie secured with a scrunchie for a half hour, then just rinsed, no shampoo. My hair looks lovely, despite no washing for almost a week and I have oily hair! We will see how it looks tomorrow.

Fantastic! Catnip does not need to be washed out, just rinsed, (making sure you understand my routine). I shampoo pre catnip only.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I use it after every soapnut wash, have started this again at the beginning of January and I have found my excema behind my ears has completely disappeared, this is the first time in 10 years I have been excema free. I have also started washing my face with it and am very pleased with the results.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
ktani, do you preoil before washing?
Last wash, I preoiled with thin absorbing oil. Hair looked a bit oily du to this.
I then washed in egg+ACV+honey.
Then I made the catnip treatment.
But I need to oil anyway afterwards, to get it easy to detangle (I have blunt ends and no damage so it should be easy to detangle).
It is a difference to not using catnip, but not enough.
I wonder if the preoil (and the wash mainly root) can make the catnip not work as well, or if my results is due to my very dry hair.
I am thinking of trying coconutmilk soaking before wasing next time. Do you think catnip treatment will not work well after this (and an egg wash)?
I have also made face tonic from catnip, and that is REALLY great - it feels sooo good. I will continue using this in skin tonic, and perhaps in my home made stuff to husband and children (decyl glucose schampo/body wash).

No, I do not pre oil pre catnip. Egg coats the hair. That is probably why you had tangling.
Catnip does not do well over coatings like conditioner. I do not think that it would do well over a pre oil either. Catnip, from my experience, needs access to the hair, and the way I use it, I think it is absorbed into the hair as much as it can be. My scalp is never dry with catnip use. Just the opposite. It is moisturized. It is able to remove my oil based sunblock on my face but catnip never leaves my skin dry there either, just the opposite there too. On my face, I just apply it, rub in and rinse off. On my hands, which can get very dry, I apply the catnip in the shower, when I do my hair, and let it soak in while my hair is bagged. My hands become silky smooth.

Ok. Thank you. If I go through all I have tested, it may be that the catnip worked best after my first soapnut wash (without preoil) and after decyl glukose wash.
I am not totally sure about this, but it may very well be like this. I know that catnip worked best those washing times.
I thought it should work after egg, and after preoil.
Maybe catnip wouldn't be enough for me then, I have to oil between washes. But will work when using decyl glucose.
SMT made from youghurt was really really nice though. I just rinsed it out, and after drying, it did not smell.
Mayby one can buy EO from catnip and use in SMT... or infuse catnip in carrier oil.

Catnip EO is an irritant and does not contain the rest of the catnip constituents. It depends on how much pre oil that you use and where you use it, as well as what kind of pre oil.
Catnip, as I said, removes my oil based sunblock, on my face.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Catnip contains oils of its own. When I first started using it, my ends were very dry. I had build-up on my hair. As I progressed with experimenting, and the build-up washed out, the catnip was able to access my hair. My ends are no longer dry, nor is my scalp in winter, nor is my skin, in winter. All I use is shampoo and catnip on my hair and my hair is now past bsl.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I pre oil with camellia oil (chinese for pre oil) or rice"bran"(?) oil.
When washing, all of the oil isn't washed off, I don't strip the hair with SLS, so it is a bit of oil coating left.
I don't really get if you say that catnip won't work over oil, because you also saying you get your oil based sunblocker off with it. (Excuse if I just didn't get it due to lack of English knowledge.)

It depends on the kind of oil and the amount. My sunblock contains oil but is not pure oil. You have some oil left behind when you wash your hair. It may be enough for the catnip to not remove/get through it.

Ok, thank you for the answer. I will try catnip again after a good decyl glucose wash.
Until then, it is doing a good job on my face :-)

I did not think that catnip would remove my sunblock but it did. I applied it twice though, just to make sure.
I do not use a lot of sunblock on my face, just enough to cover it thoroughly.
Catnip, I have found is wonderful on skin. I love it for that purpose too. I now also apply it and leave it on, around my eyes and around my mouth, after washing my face with it. It moisturizes beautifully.
-
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Catnip also removed my soap and water washable mascara. Go figure!
Catnip does not irritate eyes. Just the opposite. I get in in my eyes all of the time in the shower. It has reduced/eliminated eye irritation for me, with my dilution.

Yes, I have noticed that. The solution uses to drip all over my face and eyes when doing a hair treatment. And it just feels good.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I had read that catnip can be used as an "eye wash".
However, I had read the same thing about chamomile tea. Chamomile tea caused me eye irritation and itchiness, although it did not last and I am not allergic to it. But chamomile tea, from my experince with using it on my hair for a year, can go off fairly quickly, even when refridgerated. I did not get an eye infection though, or have any lasting problems with it, when it got into my eyes.
Catnip? 0 problems to date, in almost 4 years, from the first time I started using it on my hair and skin.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Hi! I've read thru this forum - 55 pages of the Monostat - and the Salt & Pepper! Whew! Info overload!
Tues I plan to pick up some catnip. I'm also strongly looking at the Monostat. Does anyone think there is a reason NOT to do both?
Also: memory overload - do I want a 'sulfur' based shampoo? What are the key words to look for?
Would Suave Naturals be acceptable? I forgot which the health food store had in the Avalon brand (it will be 2 weeks before I can get back to the store. I'm out in the sticks in farm country!)
I was planning to use Avalon Clarifying Lemon Condish as my wash medium, but I see the conditioner is a barrier.
Thoughts & suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a herb book that says that herbs and drugs should not be used together. However, I do not necessarily think that is the case here.
I would still use them separately though, to better judge how they both work, individually (catnip and Monostat).
Catnip does not work well over conditioners, from my experience.

Yup, I got that part - that's why I was asking about Suave - I've never heard of your Blonde Silk(?) Suave is popular, Clairol Herbal Essences and some Avalone Organics. Would picking one from the 'cone-free' list be fail-safe way to find a 'poo to use with the Catnip?
Thank you - I've really enjoyed reading this entire thread! Now, where was that one about Aloe Vera as a hair gel ...

Lively Blonde by Sunsilk, is a European formula. Unilever makes Sunsilk and Suave and Dove. My shampoo has only one cone but does not build-up. Look for a shampoo with minimal cones and no glycol distearate, a waxy conditioner ingredient, now being added to shampoos.

I use both. I use the Monistat three days a week, and leave it in between. I only wash once a week, and use the catnip that day. When my hair is nearly dry, I put the Monistat back in.
No problems of any kind from either product. I do only use the Monistat for three months, then take a month off, just to avoid it building up in my system. I don't know that it does that, but I take a break just in case.

Oh Cool! (actually it's funny - Unilever makes ... !!!)
Thank You much for the precautions! I'm really looking forward to trying this.
I'm getting the 'nip' and steeping pot ordered from Ebay this week. Hope to get in for the Malibu treatment the following week so I should have pretty 'fresh' hair to start with. I'd like to see if it will help prevent the absorption of minerals from the well-water. Currently 8 weeks between treatments is really the limit. It's getting snaggy again.

Thanks much DragonLady! :) I'll keep that in mind. I'm leaning a little toward hair vitamins first.

I just steep catnip in a bone china dollar store mug with a demitasse saucer to cover it. I tap the condensation from under the saucer, on my finger, back into the mug, when the catnip has cooled, before straining.
